Just on the off chance you may have forgotten: Jonathan Franzen finally makes his appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show this afternoon to discuss Freedom. Locally, the show airs at 4 p.m. on KSDK-TV (Channel 5).

And on the off chance you're not up on your Oprah book news (but why else would you be reading this?), the Great Tastemaker has chosen two books for the next round of her book club: A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations, both by Charles Dickens, both historically the bane of ninth graders everywhere.

Just to tide you over for the next hour, we have video after the jump of Franzen reading from Freedom at the 92nd Street Y in New York City and discussing Midwestern humor with Lorrie Moore. (Warning: Neither of them are very complimentary. In fact, if you have any Midwestern pride whatsoever, you'll be ready to tar and feather and run them both out of town on a rail next time they deign to visit here.)

Update, 4:45 p.m.: Flaverwire.com has distilled the highlights of Franzen's appearance, just for you, gentle reader.

Note: Franzen comes in around 3:20 mark.
