Monsanto Sugar Beets: Pull 'Em Out of the Ground, Says Federal Judge

Back in August, U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White in California ruled that planting or selling the crops was illegal, because Monsanto had never produced an environmental impact statement.
Since that ruling, White wrote on Tuesday, the USDA granted permits anyway to companies wanting to produce seeds.
White wrote on Tuesday that "there is a significant risk that the plantings pursuant to the permits will cause environmental harm," and that "the likely environmental harm....is irreparable."
Monsanto told the Post-Dispatch it would appeal the decision.
The St. Louis-based seed giant has claimed that not having their sugar beets approved will cost them $2 billion over the next couple years. White was unmoved. "To the extent Defendants and Intervenor-Defendants contend that they would suffer any harm," he wrote, "it is only of their own doing."
