Christopher Thompson, a 26-year-old from Pekin, Illinois, appears to have gone, well, a little nuts. (That's a sleeper pun, just so you know. You'll laugh later.)

Last Friday, a friend put a squirrel carcass on the dashboard of Thompson's car as a joke. Like any normal person would, he decided to adopt the dead rodent as a kind of pet, a buddy to drive around with. He left it on the dash.

And that might have been OK, we guess, if he hadn't decided to introduce his new squirrel friend around town.

According to the Bartonville police, who were the last people Thompson's dead squirrel friend ever met, Thompson rolled up to a Hardee's drive-thru at 9:45 p.m. and made an order, then asked for "extra nuts for my pet squirrel" when he got to the window to pick up his food.

He was holding the squirrel in his hand and stroking it lovingly.

"That squirrel's not real," the restaurant employee said, according to the police report.

"Yes, it is!" he retorted, then to prove it, chucked the squirrel through the window. It skidded over the counter and landed on the floor; a customer at the restaurant picked it up and dropped it in the snow outside.

After discarding his friend, Thompson allegedly drove away.

Police found Thompson days later, and served him notice that he was to appear in court on misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges.

NUTS, eh? (There it is!)
