Bristol Palin Uninvited to Lecture Wash. U. Students on Sex

Washington University students learned a valuable lesson on romance a week prior to their annual "Sex Week." Yes, single mothers can be alluring, but often they come with too much baggage to make it work.

So it is that the school's Student Health Advisory Committee has uninvited Bristol Palin to serve as the keynote speaker at the school's annual "Sex Week".

Palin, the daughter of the '08 Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, was to discuss abstinence with students next month. The 20-year-old reality-TV star has somehow re-branded herself an expert on the topic of chastity after giving birth to a child at the age of 18.

A decision by student leaders earlier this week to use $20,000 in student activity fees to visit the school enraged much of the student body, who view her current change of heart on pre-marital sex as hypocritical.

As the school's paper reports today, dozens of undergraduates showed up yesterday at a the Student Union Senate meeting to protest Palin's invitation. A Facebook page demanding that her invite be rescinded had over 1,100 members by yesterday.

The president of the Student Health Advisory Committee tells the school's Student Life that the decision to sever ties with Palin was 100 percent mutual with Palin and the student group agreeing that the controversy was too large of a distraction to carry on.

Yup ! Why bring in someone that has firsthand hand knowledge of the pratfalls of not abstaining. Perhaps those whiney undergrads would prefer to have Carrot Top speak. He'd be my first choice !

Anyone citing liberal bigotry is doing so because of Palin's political affiliations. This is, if anything, a very conservative decision: Choosing not to overspend on an unqualified speaker. The students were upset with a decision by the student government, voiced their opinion, and signed a petition—as allowed by the Student Union Constitution—that overturned an unapproved use of student funds.

How can you criticize this decision and then demand the repeal of the health care law?

Hum, climate of hate at this University. Go somewhere else.

Yes, the bigots and Palin haters are out in force... isn't university is supposed to be a free exchange of ideas? not at WU... its a bigot, hate, left wing, marxist, narrow-minded bunch of sewer dwellers... and their bull crap about diversity is the big propaganda lie... a leftist liethose students and the people who pushed for Bristol to be uninvited are nothing but bigots and hatemongers. They are narrow minded idiots and low lifes who deserve to stew in their own bile. This newspaper is populated by the same sort of bigotry and hate as well.Well, you are the minority in this country and just because you win some of these little skirmishes, the rest of us, the majority of Americans, see it and hold you in contempt...you vile useless excuses for human beings.

Bristol's a"chip off the old block" then; changing her stance on which way the wind blows and of course the $Beermatman

Actually, her story--a HS dropout, who at 17, was stupid enough to get pregnant, while unwed, during her mother's run as the then US Republican vice-presidential candidate, and now commands 20-30K for speaking engagements--wouldn't really dissuade me from that path--if I WERE WHITE. But, I'm not. As an African American woman, I know that were this a young Black woman, there would be no 20K offer on the table--no "Dancing with The Stars" appearances.

Hell, Wash-U would have done better, walking about 4 blocks over, around Euclid Avenue, and signing up some young Black teen (and there are plenty), living off welfare, no hope, no esteem, and little or no hope for finding herself in a secure, functional family, and parading her on stage before their student body...now that'd be a sharp kick in the pants to "keep it in your pants."

This whole Palin Family obsession has become sad, in my opinion. When a prestigious University, like Wash-U can entertain such foolishness, I don't know what to think any more. We are all idiots. And some where, some Danforth patriarch is rolling over in his grave.

I blame it on McCain. He unleashed these horrors on us.

This is just great - lefties who think they can't learn anything from someone who does not always agree with them are able to silence someone again.

seriously, a fucking moron who got pregnant because she was raised by a retarded fundie is the last person who should be speaking during sex week. abstinence is for assholes.

fuck, young people--but do it responsibly.

Apparently the student body thinks that there is nothing to learn from experience.Probably why the majority of them voted for the inexperienced Obama! Bristol did parent a child as a teenager, which was the responsible thing to do. So what grounds, other than politics, do they have against her?? Her unwarranted success on TV? Most kids going to Wash U live off mommy and daddy's monster bank accounts, are they not guilty of the same unwarranted pleasures? I always thought college was meant to expose students to all realms of learning. But apparently, Wash U is meant to expose you to liberal ideas only.

I hear that the real reason they rejected her was because she's gained some serious weight recently.

We're not making any character call regarding the content of Bristol Palin however the deference of free speech is the main issue here. I understand the students themselves voted against Ms. Palin's engagement. Well, out of 2300 employees we do have three executives that went to Olin that by the end of this day will be unemployed. See how this works kids? Welcome to reality.....

.And here I thought that today's youth had no common sense. At least these students do, an encouraging sign for our future.

Aw Damn...this would have been great theater. Who is next to get offered a speaking engagement...Snooki?

Yes universities are supposed to be a free exchange of ideas. The key word here is "idea". Unfortunately Miss Palin doesn't have too many of those, and what she does have certainly isn't worth $20k to the student body, any BTW charging $20k isn't exactly free either. I'm sure she would be welcome to come exchange her ideas for free (and if it were REALLY important to her that her message get out she should jump on that). But she really needs that $20k to drop her knowlege so no deal I guess. Sorry.

WHEN WILL THE POOR RICH WHITE PEOPLE GET THEIR CHANCE?????????????????

What should she tell the students exactly? Yes I am a unwed high school dropout mother demanding 20k per speaking engagement when I'm not on reality TV. I paid cash for my house because my mom is a polarizing divisive political hack and that got me on DWTS because enough people despise my mother it will generate ratings. You don't need an education, just be irresponsible, ignorant and lucky and stuff.

A well articulated truth. Many of the posts from others have been without substance and some made me laugh out loud. Your post, however, should be sent to Wash U.

I'm moderate and I think Wash U's decision, while an example of their elitist b.s is also free speech seeing as its a PRIVATE university. If it was public, then it is a clear sign of libtards being themselves. Also, if you're shelling out $20,000 of the students money, it should be represented fairly no? If half the students don't want her there, awesome!

Besides, she's a fucking moron and paying her to talk about sex is like paying Bernie Maddof to talk about business ethics or Nancy Pelosi on bipartisanship (also could apply for a lot of Tea Party nutters).

"Apparently the student body thinks that there is nothing to learn from experience."

Call me crazy, but I kinda suspect most of them have already learned that "If you have sex, somebody might get pregnant."The fact that Bristol clearly did not learn that simple lesson in time does not speak well for her ability to teach anyone at WashU anything at all.(It also suggests that maybe "abstinence-only" sex-ed policies may not be teaching anyone all that well either. But we already knew that.)

"Bristol did parent a child as a teenager, which was the responsible thing to do."

No, the "responsible thing to do" would have been not to get pregnant in the first place -- which reichwingers are the first, loudest, and most psychotic to shriek when talking about unwed-teenage-girls who aren't the daughters of one of their idols.(Sorta like the way they caterwaul about how drug-abusers should be shot, or at least imprisoned for life, except when it's one of their media mouthpieces. And the way they demonize draft-dodgers -- other than Republican politicians. And go ballistic on people who depend on the government for their health insurance, unless they're Republican Congresscritters.)Seeing something of a pattern here?Look up "Republican" in a good thesaurus, and "hypocrite" will be the first word listed.

Most Wash U kids are nerdy and don't get laid. The last thing they need is some cow from Alaska telling them not to bone each other, let alone pay 20Gs for the privilege.

Because she's pregnant, again; the father is her 'dancing with the almost-but-not-really-stars-because-really-what-has-bristol-palin-done-to-become-famous' dancing partner.

I personally think it says more that she was invited to begin with, rather than the fact that she was uninvited later on.

Oh, and someday people will realize that just because something involves speech doesn't mean it involves the issue of free speech.

Typical teatard:

"Not paying 'proof-that-abstinence-only-education = massive fail' thousands of $ to state the obvious"="teh hate"

But

"suggesting that maybe violent rhetoric be turned down just a notch after nutcase murders several, attempts to kill more"= "blood libel"

Even more support for my last comment:"Republican" = "hypocrite"

Though I do appreciate the reminder that we must add in "thin-skinned crybaby" as another synonym, so for that, MikeC, I thank you. There, there, Mikey; run home to mommy, and she will kiss it and make it aaalllll better, as she always does for her widdle diddumbs.

Billy- I highly agree they could find much better use for 20Gs, but they clearly were ready to pay it initially. But I don't think "Spending" was the issue the student body had. They should just be honest and say "We are uninviting Ms. Palin because it's a popular stance among our students to dislike her based on no substantial merit." So really Wash U is the hypocrite.
