Unofficial 2010 Homicide Totals for St. Louis: 142 Dead

St. Louis police have released the preliminary body count for 2010. According to police, at least 142 people were murdered inside city limits in 2010. That's one fewer than last year.

Then again, the number could still change. Police say it won't be until mid-January until the FBI verifies the data.

Like last year, Daily RFT plans to break down the crimes by age once the official numbers are in. Based on our coverage over the past 12 months, we're betting that victims age 21 and under will once again make up at least 30 percent of city homicides. Unfortunately.

Update: The police put out their unofficial homicide estimate at 2:55 p.m. on December 31. Daily RFT has since learned that a 43-year-old man was murdered around 10:15 p.m. New Year's Eve in 5500 block of Era Avenue in north St. Louis. That said, it's looking like last year's murder rate will at least tie the number of homicides in 2009.

+1... On New Year's Eve, police responded to a house fire in the 3800 block of Cottage in north St. Louis. A male victim was found dead on the second floor of the home. An autopsy was conducted Monday showed that the cause of the man's death was blunt trauma to the head and that it appears the victim died prior to the start of the fire. Therefore, police are now classifying this death as a homicide.
