Missouri Congressman Wants to Kill Funding for Climate Change

Luetkemeyer: Insert tinfoil hat above.
Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-9th District) is proud of his view that global warming is a myth. So proud, in fact, that last weekend he attached a provision onto a budget bill that would ban the United States from funding the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The IPCC is the group that -- along with Al Gore -- won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to research climate change and educate the world on its consequences. Of course, all you have to do is mention the words "Nobel Peace Prize" and "Al Gore" to know what knee-jerk Republicans, such as Luetkemeyer, think about the IPCC.

Luetkemeyer writes on his website that the IPCC is "fraught with waste and fraud ... engaged in dubious science" and "the last thing hard-working American taxpayers should be paying for."

Never mind that most climate scientists are in full agreement with the IPCC. Luetkemeyer, instead, holds tight to the assertions of a dwindling number of researchers questioning climate change and points to the disproven "Climategate" conspiracy, in which the IPCC allegedly suppressed findings contradictory to global warming.

Luetkemeyer's amendment passed the House in a bi-partisan vote that would kill $13 million in U.S. funding for IPCC in the unlikely event that it also clears the Senate.

I'm willing to bet Luetkemyer's house didn't lose power during Snowmageddon like it did at the beginning of the month in my neighborhood. I'm willing to bet he didn't have to nearly break his back to break the two inches of sleet/ice mixture on his drive way like I did. I bet he didn't throw up or get sick from overworking himself shoveling the 1 to 2 FEET of snow we got in a single snow storm this winter. What further proof do you need to see that climate change is so very real? That climate change doesn't just mean soaking/flooding severe thunderstorms and sweltering droughts, but can also mean very frigid weather and torrential ice storms?Who want's to bet Mr. Wizard being the grand anti-scientist he is cuts funding for the highway department to replenish it's salt supply? God knows he doesn't believe in mass transit, wind or solar energy or the EPA who stated our carbon output has gone up since the last time they tallied the numbers, especially in his section of St. Charles County.

Why is it American conservatives appear to have abandoned reality? The sting in the tail is that reality doesn't care what they think.....but their descendents (kids and their kids.....) will not thank them or think well of them for being so incredibly brain dead.

We were wrong. Let’s move on.Climate Change was for gullible fools and we former believers now clearly see that “crisis”, “catastrophic”, “sever” and “unstoppable warming” were a climate cowards death threat. It was an embarrassing era of environMENTAL environmentalism and I wish I could take back the times I implied to our younger minds that “they“ will die on a dying planet from CO2. If any of you stay behind believers and your faded “worst-case-scenario profiting” scientists had any stones at all, you would call climate change what it was supposed to be, death. Not unpleasant weather. How is a little crisis possible anyways? History is not going to be kind to our Disco Doomsday Science and modern day witch burning and even Obama himself bailed on the “crisis” in his state of the union speech. Add to that, the Republican majority just voted to pull all American IPCC funding and there is wide spread talk now of arrests coming. Failed calls for crisis always back fire and now Obama and the press have a new enemy, those who led us to war against climate variation. A wave of former believer rage has arrived and I dare anyone to say unstoppable warming is absolutely true. It’s no different from any old freak standing by the side of the road holding a sign with THE END IS NEAR, SAVE THE PLANET scribbled on it.

Obama bailed on Climate Change because he is looking at a US House of Representatives now run by a hoard of ignorant GOP reps with too much"religion" and not enough reality.

Al Gore, despite the fact that he won the "nobel peace prize"(which by the way was awarded to him for fooling the public) is a politician not a climate scientist. And now he is very wealthy because of his "opening of our eyes farce" about CO2.

He and his colleagues at the IIPC won the prize. Joint effort to enlighten the idiot consumer based world we live in. Educate yourself, just a suggestion.

This has nothing to do with Al Gore. The science is there for anyone to look at if you take the time and educate yourself to understand what it means.

What it means is people are warming the planet. Nothing else explains the rising CO2 levels...and they aren't up for debate or opinion. They are what they are.

ok, so forget about al gore.

now, what of the overwhelming scientific consensus on global warming? let me guess, you have a link to some oil company-funded think tank or an article about a couple dozen fundie scientists?

I support you completely. With the issues facing the Middle East, we need to be focusing on becoming an independent country. Help release the ban on new drilling. Help establish nuclear and solar energy. I also believe the EPA needs to be removed. I believe we need to create a cleaner world, but we need to use common sense to get there.

It's either clean or it isn't. "Common sense" has been correctly described as "those preconceptions and prejudices one acquires before the age of 18" (Einstein).

yeah getting rid of the EPA would be a giant step towards a cleaner world
