"Race Baiting" Video Suggests Black Panthers Behind Effort for Local Control of Police

Danger alert! Black radicals will control St. Louis police department!!!
The St. Louis Tea Party and a former president of the St. Louis Police Officers Association have sunk to new lows in their attempts to thwart an effort to restore local control of the St. Louis police department.

Last Thursday, the local Tea Party blog, Reboot Congress, posted a video (viewable below) of SLPOA's former president, Sgt. Gary Wiegert, speculating that the sponsor of HB 71 is aligned with the militant group the New Black Panthers. Wiegert makes this claim based on the flimsiest of evidence -- a photo (right) of state representative Jamilah Nasheed (D - North St. Louis) in which alleged members of the New Black Panthers stand behind her at a rally.

The video goes on to produce a flyer from 2006 in which Nasheed was a panelist -- along with the editor of the St. Louis American and several black leaders -- to discuss the historical significance of the Black Panthers forty years after its founding.

Does that make her a Black Panther sympathizer?

Apparently so, according to Wiegert and Reboot Congress. Yesterday in Jefferson City, the co-sponsor of the Nasheed's bill and Republican speaker of the house, Steve Tilley, called the efforts by Wiegert and Reboot Congress "race-baiting at a level that I haven't seen since I've been here."

That prompted St. Louis Tea Party co-founder Bill Hennessey to respond: "We truly regret that Speaker Tilley has chosen to make the vote over Local Control an issue of race, as opposed to what is truly best for the citizens of the city of St. Louis."

Nasheed's bill, BTW, passed by a veto-proof 109-46 margin and now heads to the Senate.

Here's that video:

Correction: This post initially stated that Wiegert is the current president of the SLPOA. He is not. That position is currently held by Tom Walsh.

There is some heavy political maneuvering going on here. I am very surprised at the attitude and demeanor of Steve Tilley. Are you kidding me? Frannie Slay has worked very hard to develop a viable entity in a deteriorating City of St. Louis which is basically "race proof". Now, here comes Steve Tilley trying to take advantage of a rough situation and try to win black votes" for the Republican Party in the City of St. Louis. You have to be really kidding me! There is no such "entity" as a black vote for a Republican. It is a monlithic entity. Also, "pictures show a thousand words".

Rep.Naheed is a hard working representative who looks out for the good of the people she represents. First, I would like to know the difference between someone being a sympathizer with the New Black Panthers and a sympathizer of the TeaParty. BTW, there is nothing wrong with discussing the history of the Black Panther Party movement. The Ku Klux Klan movement has been discussed and is even in our history books and encyclopedias.

What every reader should know is that St. Louis City residents want local control of it's police department.

Second, Jamila Nasheed is a very intelligent person. She knows exactly what she's doing..

How is showing a picture of a politician with people who may or may not be black panthers 'Race Bating'?

Showing a picture isn't race baiting, Chad. You and the people who are claiming that is race baiting are the ones brining up race and therefore race baiting.

i like that a white guy calling himself "your momma" is schooling everyone on racial sensitivity issues

Yes it is. The video is meant to scare white people into thinking that, should local control become a reality, the "new black panthers" (bunch of anti-semites with no connection to the former Black Panther Party) will be running the Police Department. I wonder how Slay and these black nationalists would equitably divide the pension fund equally considering their seemingly disparate interests?

That's speculative at best.

You cannot divine a persons intent simply because they display a picture of black people hanging out. Perhaps that picture scares YOU thus your sensitivity, but that doesn't mean that was the intent.

Chad and the others made this about race when THEY brought it up.

Ditto, Douglas Ducksworth. You'd have to have real blinders on to think that Wiegert is doing anything but trying to scare white voters into thinking that black radicals are going to take over the police department.

"What are you talking about? The author of the video wouldn't have portrayed Nasheed as a conduit for the black panthers if the intent wasn't to scare whitey into voting against local control."

Always about race with you, eh? Pictures of Black Panthers can only mean race baiting, calling an entire race 'Whitey'... WTF is wrong with you?

Black Panthers are indeed black, but certain members have also been alot of things that scare people in general not just white people.

Again people like you and Chad are the ones making this about race. Good Job.

That's the stupidist thing I've ever heard. Talk about your fear-mongering. I'm sort of sorry you even gave this play. You know lots of people will take the headline literally and overlook the "racebaiting" part.

St. Louis tea party claims that Tilley is "associated with the New Black Panther Party" because he supports a bill by someone who once was photographed standing next to a black man in a beret, then claims that Tilley is "injecting race" into the debate? Unfreakinbelievable.

It's incredible to me that the same arguments (that St. Louis politicians sympathize with black people) from the Civil War are still being pulled out today. It's disgusting, and anyone who engages in that kind of dialogue, especially with the intent to "scare" us into capitulating on local control, is off their moral rocker.
