Non-Racist St. Louis Tea Party Has Odd Way of Showing It

Categories: Politics

The handiwork of St. Louis Tea Party lobbyist Gary Wiegert's has been described as "race-baiting" -- and that's a Republican who said that.
We know. We know. Despite the findings of the NAACP and the curious links between its better-known mouthpieces and hate groups, the Tea Party is not a racist outfit. No, far from it.

In fact, it's organizations like National Public Radio that are the true racist agencies, according to one of Missouri's biggest Tea Party supporters, Lt. Governor Peter Kinder.

Still, an action this month by the St. Louis Tea Party seems rather suspicious for such a color-blind and all-embracing institution. As the Post-Dispatch reported yesterday, the local Tea Party now has a lobbyist in Jefferson City.

His name is Gary Wiegert, the former president of the St. Louis Police Officer's Association, and an outspoken champion for the effort to keep the city's police department under state control. For some reason, the St. Louis Tea Party has also lined up against local control, even though Mayor Francis Slay and most the city's elected officials are pushing for the change.

Here, though, is what's so curious about Wiegert's job with the Tea Party and a factoid somehow left out of the Post-Dispatch coverage.

Last month, Wiegert appeared in a controversial online video in which he suggested that a hate group called the New Black Panthers is behind the push for local control of the St. Louis police. Wiegert makes his assumption based on the flimsiest of evidence -- a picture of the bill's sponsor, state representative Jamilah Nasheed (D - St. Louis), photographed next to a pair of black men in berets.

Even political conservatives in Jefferson City saw Wiegert's video as little more than a scare tactic intended to frighten whites into believing that black radicals would somehow take over the police department under local rule. Missouri Speaker of the House Steve Tilley (R - Perryville) referred to the video as "race-baiting at a level that I haven't seen since I've been here."

So the question is, why would a group as unprejudiced as the St. Louis Tea Party sign Wiegert on as their one and only lobbyist? Unless, that is, the Tea Party is perhaps just the teeny-tiniest bit racist. Nah. Perish the thought!

I don't see any diversity at tea party events. All of the hate laced bigoted signs are held up by white knuckled knuckleheads.  Most likely that they live in all white neighborhoods. I suppose you can't blame them for their lack of knowledge of politics as the republicans have been bamboozling them for like forever. I pity them actually, they're too politically illiterate to understand they are being used by corpoarations that could  care less about them. Corporations that care only about the $$$ it brings to corporate execs. oh well as someone once said " I pity the fool " ...............

NOt yet living in STL, but as a supporter of Tea Party principles this is disconcerting. However; painting all who agree with the principles behind the Tea Party, and messages of low taxes, controlled spending and debt policies, realistic foreign and domestic security policies, aren't inherently racist, anymore than Clinton leaving Harlem is a racist move. The real idea of the Tea Party is all americans stepping forward and demanding responsible behavior by those we elect to represent OUR interests.

How about you being guilty of "racism baiting". I'm so sick of fake social justice crusading on non-issues like this. I wouldn't trust a St. Louis politician with walking my dog, let the state keep control of them. Why the would St. Louis bureaucrats do any better they can't even manage the city!!!!

Well Chad, can you imagine if Mr. Wiegert held up this picture of a certain young man:http://www.riverfronttimes.com... as concrete proof that communists have infiltrated our schools?Seriously though, have you called or tried to contact Mr. Wiegert or Rep. Nasheed? Perhaps the old proverb: "Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see." is in play here. While the video may well support your interpretation I'm reminded of an event where a picture of one of our state senators was shown in a photo standing next to a lady state senator of the opposing party. In the primary it was circulated and touted as proof positive he'd sold out. It turns out the photo was taken during his stint as capitol aide years ago.I'd like to hear their slant on this if you have the time. In addition, please give us some advance warning should you need help at Adams Elementary next time. I got lots of lighter fluid and a teddy bear begging to be torched. Those durned second graders don't deserve to finger-paint on our dime!Kidding aside, keep up the good work.

Don't be silly. They're not personally racist. They just happen to like to use race-baiting to score cheap political points.

Chad, I'm surprised at you! You fail to mention that Tilley, who accuses Wiegert of racism, received a $200,000 campaign contribution from Rex Sinquefield - while he was running unopposed. Why is this relevant? Sinquefield is an outspoken proponent of local control.

I know Wiegert from his days as a talk show host, and while he is outspoken and opinionated, he's no racist. And the fact is, if he wanted to engage in race baiting, he didn't need to bring in the Black Panthers - all he needed was a photograph of Jamilah Nasheed. In case you didn't notice, she's black too. And did I mention that she is Muslim? Not that there's anything wrong with that ...

I got another term for you - "racism baiting". It's not a new phenomenon, it's all over the place, but needed a name. Sure the term is not clever, but neither is the practice.

Yeah, but to my knowledge Sinquefield hasn't made any videos in which he produces a photo of, say, Francis Slay surrounded by bald white guys and uses it as propaganda for his goal. "See, here! The mayor is obviously a skinhead sympathizer, so no worries about him handing over the police department to those Black Panthers! Now give us local control!"

Dude Chad dude, you are supposed to be a journalist - try to stick to facts instead of fabricating inflammatory fantasies. You should stop writing and spend tome developing an understanding of logical fallacies, because they dominate your entire thought process.
