KMOV Stalks RCGA's Dick Fleming; Question Is, Who Fared Worse?

Rowrr!
Did you see KMOV's report last night on Dick Fleming, the head of St. Louis' chamber of commerce, the Regional Chamber and Growth Association?

For sheer entertainment value, it was a doozy. Evidently, reporter Craig Cheatham has been trying to interview Fleming for months to discuss his salary. Fleming, meanwhile, has been successfully avoiding Cheatham.

Until, that is, the journalist recently tracked down Fleming in a hotel hallway.

It's been a while since we here at Daily RFT have rolled out our Ass Clown of the Week feature. In this case we just couldn't resist, even though we can certainly empathize with Cheatham. It's damn frustrating when an official flat-out ignores questions from the media.

But what does the general public think? Take a look at the following video clip and then tell us who made the bigger ass out of themselves: Cheatham or Fleming?

A couple observations before you cast your vote: We love the clip of Cheatham slapping the tax forms on the desk for dramatic effect. Ker-slaapp! And doesn't the scene at the end with Fleming hiding behind food crates look like one of those Saturday Night Live skits filmed in the hallways of Rockefeller Center?

The RCGA should have been renamed RDFA for "Repetitive Dick Fleming Association." This gentleman made a very fine livelihood spinning his cult of personality while failing to promote and elevate St. Louis. And for an individual lacking in charisma and personality, this is certainly saying something! His promotion schtick grew old and tired over the years. If he was the best emissary St. Louis could attract, then I guess we deserved a languishing development landscape.

How do you get one of these 1.8 million $ jobs? He was giving a presentation to about 5 people!

Of course this interview was sensationalized for dramatic effect, but Dick Fleming handled it immaturely and unprofessionally. When grilled about St. Louis' flat business growth, he could've easily said something like, "While many other metropolitan areas lost thousands of jobs, I'd say flat growth is a positive thing in light of this tough recession." Done. That would've been a respectable answer. Instead, he acted like a 7th grader.

Cheatam seems like he was under orders to do this ridiculous pice of s### story. He's the one who looks like a fool, not Fleming. The premise of the story--that StL has been hit by mega-corporate layoffs and it's somehow Fleming's fault--is as laughable as the clownish execution. Ass Clown with Oak Leaf Cluster to Cheatam.

As another fellow member of the media in STL, I have to respectfully disagree with Xyx4611.

This story, to me, was the end-result of months of repeated attempts by Craig to have a face to face talk with Flemming. I've watched Craig's pieces for a while now and have spoken to him at length about previous/similar situations. He would tell you he always PREFERS a fair and straight-forward lane of communication with people- as opposed to literally having to chase someone down just to answer a few questions.

Who was the bigger ass clown? Why is there even a choice? Name-calling: FlemmingHiding in a hallway having pretending to be on the phone: Flemming. Physically putting a hand on someone else (A big NO-NO in news) as a show of contempt: Flemming. Only making eye-contact when you're literally standing over someone on a stage to appear more dominant? Flemming, for the win! We have a winner!

Craig was doing his job, and a damn fine effort to boot. Don't try and tell me St. Louis is on the up and up when it comes to economic growth. It's not, and we all know it.

I like how Fleming disappears behind a black curtain into a glowing neon room at the end of the interview....

As a fellow member of the media, I used to have a lot of respect for Cheatam. After this, not so much. Cheatam wins Ass Clown by a huge margin.

So let me get this straight -- a guy who is hired for the sole purpose of bringing jobs to the area isn't supposed to be held responsible when.... no jobs are brought to the area? lol That would be like me hiring a guy to cut my lawn and then not questioning him when the grass is ten feet tall. Craig tried to ask the guy some questions and get his point of view and Fleming acted like a baby.

Oh please, you're not a member of the media and never were.
