Missouri House Passes Bill to Overturn Puppy Mill Vote, Issue Now Goes to Governor

An interested party reacts to the news.
The Missouri House this afternoon passed by a margin of 85 to 71 a bill that would overturn many of the regulations for dog breeders that state voters approved last year.

A similar bill, SB113, passed the Senate earlier this year. The legislation gets rid of the limits that were to be put in place this August following the close passage in November of the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act. The new bill would strip provisions of the prevention act that limited dog breeders to owning no more than 50 breeding animals and required that the canines have ample room to move in their cages.

Now organizers of the November ballot issue say they'll coordinate another petition drive should Governor Jay Nixon sign the law.

"The House decided to defy the will of the voters and dismantle Proposition B piece by piece, dealing a blow to dogs suffering in substandard facilities and also to the democratic process in Missouri," said Barbara Schmitz of Missourians for the Protection of Dogs in a statement today. "Not only did some lawmakers choose to overturn a statewide vote, but some of them even voted against their districts. It is now up to Governor Jay Nixon to stop this assault on voting rights. If the repeal bill is enacted, we are prepared to immediately begin gathering signatures for a referendum to bring this issue back to Missouri voters and allow the people to have the final say."

Holy cow. A limit of FIFTY breeding animals for a dog breeding operation is still waaaaaay too many! Dogs should not be treated like chickens.

For those calling for us to vote them out, you can see how well voting worked in the first place.

I'm more for rounding up a bunch of strays and dumping them on these politicians' lawns.

Missouri, You know what has to be done now. You must vote them out and get new people who will listen to you. It is a shame that politicians in this country think that they can do what the hell they want and We The People have no say. Where does the arrogance come from? Before anyone is ALLOWED to vote on this bill every one of them should have to spend at least Three whole days and nights at a puppy mill feeding, cleaning and doing away with the dead. Let them get their nostrils full of the stench of poop, pee, bacteria, fungus, death, etc and then lets see how they vote. ALL DOGS deserve better. We are The United States of America not a third world country. Puppy mills are shameful and need to be outlawed!!!!!

What the hell is WRONG with these people! They all should have to GO TO A PUPPY MILL - one that's been cited for VIOLATIONS, before they can VOTE ON SOMETHING THEY OBVIOUSLY DON'T KNOW A DAMNED THING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!

This is a NATIONAL disgrace to the whole US democracy system, not just Missouri's. The fact that Missourians let it happen and the whole USA did NOT stand behind the ones who fought so hard to stop this travesty of justice makes me wonder and fear for the whole democracy system now in place. SPEAK UP USA.....before you lose ALL your rights!!!! These poor animals now suffer on because of politicians allowed to go on unchecked....what a shame!!!

How can lawmakers change what the people voted for? I just don't understand anything anymore these days. That's bullshit.

I don't live in Missouri but you are all crazy if you don't start calling your lawmakers today and SPEAK UP for what you think is right. This is just one law. If you roll over no and let them strip this law that YOU want then don't compaline when you have no rights! Wake up and do the right thing!

1. Why even bother letting us vote at all?2. Let's see if something actually is effective and working before we over turn it, please.3. Really, MO gov't? They're puppies. We've already got a reputation as the most dangerous city in the US, a severe state wide meth problem, and top 5 rates for 2 major STDs. Let's not add being the best at abusing puppies to our list.

There is a huge problem here when we are voting for something like this yet trying to control the population and keep animal cruelty down. What is wrong with people voting to allow any of this is just absolutely CRAZY! What a waste of tax payers money

I DID call my representatives and others in Missouri asking them not to disregard the will of the voters and repeal Prop B. Guess WHAT? My calls and emails, along with those of thousands of other Missouri citizens were ignored. Now it is time to vote the whole lot of them out!

MO is already known across the country as the puppy mill capital of the world. In California, every puppy offered for sale must have a tag that lists the state in which it was born. The vast majority of them are from MO. It's obvious that MO makes it easy for puppy mills to operate there. Very sad.
