Sheriff's Deputy Needs Three Bullets to Subdue Angry Chihuahua

Killer Chihuahua!
A sheriff's deputy in southeast Missouri resigned last week after killing a Chihuahua during a home search in Bollinger County.

For Deputy Kelly Barks, the dog's growl was apparently worse than its bite. Barks (yes, that really is her name) was reportedly responding to a domestic disturbance call in February when she encountered three growling dogs, including the Chihuahua. When the miniature pooch snapped at her leg, Barks shot the canine and exited the home.

Realizing that she hadn't actually been bitten, Barks re-entered the dwelling. She told her superiors that the Chihuahua continued to appear vicious, so she then reportedly shot the dog once more. The dog then retreated to its kennel, where Barks allegedly delivered a third -- and fatal -- gunshot.

Bollinger County Sheriff Leo McGrath told Cape Girardeau's KFVS last week that Barks had been a good employee; however, he was "just sick" about the killing of the Chihuahua.

"When I found out the dog that was shot was a Chihuahua, I really was upset," said McElrath.

Still, you have to wonder how skilled of a cop Barks really was. Three shots to put down a Chihuahua? I bet Barney Fife could've done it in a minimum of two.

This just breaks my heart..that little dog was just protecting his home..I have a chihuahua and they are all mouth!  This should be considered ANIMAL CRUELTY and she should have to pay the penalty!  This is WRONG!

Why not use mace instead or another non-lethal means to deal with a giant threat such as a mouthy little dog? Officer Barks is just plain trigger happy and should be fired!

someone needs to stuff this pathetic excuse for a human being into a kennel and shoot her, twice to wound and then one to finish her off.

Same thing happened in Blue Ash, OH in June 2009. Cops tasered that chihuahua, then shot it 3 times on it's own front porch. Family came home (with the kids!) to see blood, bullets, and fur on the doorstep. Caused a bit hoopla here.

Similar incident a year or two ago on the West side of Cleveland when the burglar alarm at a local Doctor's residence went off (in error) while he was at work. The responding officer shot and killed the man's pet Golden Retriever, claiming that it bared it's teeth at him. I don't believe I have ever seen a Golden Retriever bare it's teeth. I hate cops just about as much as criminals - in many cases they are opposite sides of the same coin.

Barney Fife was only allowed to have one bullet and it was supposed to be in his pocket. This 'officer' should be fired, they are a danger to themselves, their fellow officers and the community.

What a shame, I own a chihuahua and she is a people dog. Not a mean bone in her body, if that would happen to my chihuahua, they would have to put me down too. Chihuahuas get a bad rap, putting it down is not the amswer

I would assume that this agency is like most others and officers have non-lethal weapons on their duty-belts such as pepper-spray. Why was this not employed? It also seems that the officer was not aware of the dog being a Chihuahua. Why not? Its size is apparent. Sad case of ill-trained officers being sent out into the field.

I'd probably resign too, if it took me three shots to kill a barking rat. Gotta wonder what kind of duty ammo the sheriff is issuing if it took three on one of those Mexican badgers.

Police need to be trained how to deal with dogs in these situations. Shoot first, and then shoot again is not effective police procedure.

And seriously, a chihuahua? And then pursuing the dog into the kennel to shoot it again? You bet she shouldn't be on the force.

Shoot first and shoot again strategy works north of 40

Any official police type person should be fired immediately with a reaction and situation like this. Dogs big or small will just naturally defend their own territory...in a situation like this..animal control should have been called if the owner of the dogs did not put the dogs on leash.

While I agree somewhat - an LEO shooting a Chihuahua three times requires quite a bit of justification, which seems lacking - your blanket statement that the officer needs to retreat and involve animal control isn't any more accurate.

Retreating / Calling Animal Control isn't always possible or responsible. Children could be in danger, evidence could be in jeopardy, etc.
