St. Louis To Get Three New Charter Schools

Mayor Francis Slay yesterday announced the addition of three more charter school options for St. Louis families, just in time for the coming school year.

In announcing the new schools, Slay said that charter schools are necessary as the St. Louis Public School District continues to re-earn its accreditation with the state.

"Nothing frustrates me more than to hear of young couples moving out of the city because of a lack of quality education options," said Slay. "Charter schools are providing city families with an option to stay -- and they are giving others a reason to hope that all children in St. Louis can get a great, affordable education."

The three new schools opening in time for the fall semester are:

Jamaa Learning Center
at 2900 N. Prairie for grades K-8. The school eventually plans to add a new building at 4400 St. Louis Avenue and will open this year for grades kindergarten and grades three through six.

Preclarus Mastery Academy at 625 North Euclid Avenue for grades 5-12. The school's mission will be to ensure that all its students both enter and graduate from a nationally-ranked four-year university. Preclarus is currently enrolling for 5th and 6th grades and plans to add a grade each year.

South City Prep at 2900 S. Grand Boulevard for grades 5-12, with a similar mission to prepare students to enter, succeed in, and graduate from college. South City Prep is currently enrolling for 5th and 6th grades and will add a grade each year.
