St. Louis Police Raid Swingers Club "Red 7"; Consenting Adults Beware!

red 7.jpg
Police estimate 150 people were inside Red 7 at the time of Saturday's bust.
The PBS history series, American Experience, recently aired a documentary on the Stonewall Uprising. You know that story, don't you?

In June 1969, New York City police attempted to shut down the Stonewall Bar in Greenwich Village. It was customary then for the police to raid such bars in an effort to harass and embarrass the gay clientele inside. But at Stonewall, the gays fought back. Riots broke out for days, eventually leading to changes in New York's discriminatory laws against homosexuals.

I couldn't help thinking about Stonewall this morning when I read how police recently cracked down on a south St. Louis swingers club. Three cops and a liquor control agent posed as male-female couples on Saturday and ventured into the Red 7 at 8658 Broadway.

The club was hosting a party that night for St. Louis Adult Connections, a social club that describes itself as an "adult group for committed lifestyle friendly couples and ladies 21 and over." Apparently, Red 7 had hosted the group numerous times -- and someone tipped off the cops.

As the Post-Dispatch chronicles today, once inside the bar, the undercover officers saw "women with their shirts unbuttoned and clothing removed, couples openly fondling each other and groups having oral sex." The cops called in their findings to a police lieutenant who sent in the blue shirts.

An estimated 150 people were in attendance. Two people -- a patron and one of the bar's co-owners, Alen Prohic -- were ticketed for permitting lewd or indecent conduct or entertainment in a licensed liquor establishment. It's unclear whether the other owner, Jeffrey Koenigs, was there Saturday.

"It's sort of like raves used to be," said Liquor Commissioner Bob Kraiberg, in explaining the bust. "If you're not watching the swinger pages, you're not going to know about it."

Which is exactly my point. Who were these swingers harming on Saturday night? And would anyone outside of their community have known about this if the police hadn't conducted their raid? Lastly, in a city plagued by legitimate crime, is busting consenting adults really the best use of our law enforcement resources?

An interesting aside: Red 7 has gone through numerous name changes over the years, including "Rock Star" and "The All New Tequila Wild." In the mid-2000s the bar -- located near the River Des Peres -- was called "Rock Island" and managed by Randy Greenman.

Greenman hired his friend George Whitter to work the door of the club. In September 2007 Greenman and Whitter disappeared after leaving another nightclub in south St. Louis County. Their bodies would be found months later scattered about Jefferson and St. Charles counties. Last August, St. Louis County prosecutors indicted five members of a motorcycle gang with their murders. Authorities say Greenman had been trafficking drugs on behalf of the Invaders bike gang before running afoul of the group.

alot of cops are swingers and so are school teachers. they just keep it low profile and never admit to it or talk about to anyone but their own kind like other swingers. being a swinger is nothing more than 1960s hippie sex in 2011 done by mostly well off $$ white cookie cutter yuppies.

Oh, and because of the bust, a whole lot of people who are Swingers now know about St. Louis Adult Connection and Red 7. I realize Red 7 isn't strictly a Swingers Bar. Thanks for the free advertising St. Louis' Finest! You just helped increase the Swinger activity by letting people know about this group. ha ha ha. Morons.

I can't believe the cops waste their time with this. Our cars was stolen out of our driveway while we were home at 10am on a Sunday morning and the cops acted as concerned as if a Gnome had been stolen from our front yard. (no, we don't really have gnomes) They told us they were to busy to investigate. They need to get there priorities straight.

Did everyone notice the "An interesting aside" which brought a violent history into a completely non-violent story - if you look at the story the guns were all carried in by the police state, everyone else carried only their good will.  The fact that a location is shared is not relevant and the sole intent is to add sensational violence to an unwarranted police raid story.  This is your local news doing a good job of supporting the police state.

The gangs of swingers are taking over the city. Time to close them down, and make the streets for teens to socialize once again on public streets.

Nice to see that St Louis that recently got the "honor" of making it on a top 10 list of most dangerous cities in the country have their priorities strait. *sigh*

I wish the police would find something better to do that raid swinger parties.  Like you said, what is the harm in them?  I don't see why it's a problem.  It is again the government upholding Christian values which is ridiculous since the first amendment gives freedom of religion.  I don't think it's right that the government rules on a Christian basis.

Good to see the Christian Taliban are continuing their program of setting up the Christian Fascist Police state.

Wonder how many patrons were told by the cops they could make the trouble "go away" if they just did a "little favor".

F'ing puritanical hypocrites.

Technically, they were right to shut it down if liquor was being sold on the premises while such activities were happening.  Every swingers club/event I've seen previously has always stated it's BYOB as nothing could be sold.  Nothing wrong with that lifestyle, just follow the rules so the "normal" (HA) folk don't get all riled up.

I half agree - they were breaking the liquor rules and should have been fined.  But was it really necessary to make it a big public bust???  They could have just as easily quietly spoken to the owner, presented a fine, and asked that the club be closed.  No need for a riot squad!

It should also be noted that the laws for swinger clubs vary from one jurisdiction to another, so it's not always as simple as making it BYOB.  I'm having trouble figuring out how to legally host swinger parties in my area (BC Canada), and I'm a bit fearful of something like this happening.

Unfortunately, as most swingers (myself included) are too scared of the repercussions of coming out of the swinging closet on our our professional and family lives, we don't have any political voice to defend our rights as consenting adults engaging in an activity that harms no one.

I'm glad to see that now that violent crimes and theft are completely unheard of in St Louis, our police are moving on to the important things like cracking down on blowjobs.

Well let's face it folks, the police are scared of the streets. They are cowards. That is why they bust people like this. They carry guns, tasers, mace , clubs, cuffs and zipties, a shotgun or assault rifle in the trunk, and they were bulletproof vests. And yet people are still murdered everyday and night in st. Louis. So they decide to mess with people about their sex lives. COWARDS

It's really nothing less than a tragedy to see liberty shoved another tiny step back into the darkness. Individual rights to gather and do as they please behind closeddoors?  So what that it wasn't a privateresidence!  Often government, surroundedby their armed thugs, like to claim there is a distinction between a privateresidence and a commercial residence leased for a private party, then suddenlyit is "public displays".  Thecitizens of this decaying nation just paid to have four jackbooted government thugs walk past the violent crime of the city - where one citizen is truly hurting anotherthrough property theft or physical assault, and instead entrap law abidingcitizens by pretending to be a part of a legal consenting activity.  It is still legal for one human to touch andbare themselves to another human that desires such exposure and contact in a private setting?  Does it cease to be private even though others wish to come into such closed doors, fully recognizing the behavior at hand?  How many closed doors must the government lie they're way passed before it is the lie that is the crime? If they lie their way into YOUR bedroom, is it still lewd conduct?   Usually, in this type of event its  people that chose to get together in aprivately booked venue with a clear understanding that there might be a littleEuropean beach style fun on display. But with the warehouse full of regulationsand legislation none of us can go through the day without breaking a law, either legislated or written into regulation by other jackbooted governmentthugs dressed innocuously as government servants. Servants, hah! Where elsewill they go undercover in order to expose legal activity hurting nobody thatfalls into some grey area of regulation? It is a tragedy, but those that didn't have their libery trampled on that particular night will laugh and think it's all so juicy asthe armed government hirelings push our liberty back into the medieval darkness a little further everyday.

I would think that the simple fact that they have hosted this kind of party on numerous occasions......and no one was the wiser, would be an indication that their isn't a problem.  Consenting adults folks, that's what we are dealing with.  So they busted some people having oral sex..ok..ticket them..end of story..no need to broadcast about the 'secret sex society' or put out the 'swinger alert'

Well Like cops have nothing better to do with there time. Swingers pay taxes too! All they did nothing but mess up everyones night! They just want to make money and fine someone but in the mean time people that work there have kids to feed! Cops always want respect from us but in return the everyday person gets nothing but a cocky audited from them! In fact I know there has been cops at that same swinger party before so they must not think it's to bad!

FTR, I know several STL city and co. cops that ARE IN FACT SWINGERS!  I wonder if the bust would (or did) take place if those cops had been in attendance?!?  Not to mention, the things mentioned in the article have taken place on dance floors at most of the bars I've been to on any average night, no special club meeting needed! WTF!

I've met Jeff & hope that this does not hurt his business. Red 7 is not a hoosier bar or a swingers' club. Just like every other venue, the crowd and activity are going to vary from night to night depending on the entertainment provided. Best wishes to all involved.

Murders, shootings, cops beating and dumping low lifes across the river nope the real problem is 50 year old titties being fondled by a dentist or insurance agent.  Throw the book at them.

Huh...  I drive by there all the time, and here I always assumed it was just another SoCo hoosier bar.  The things you learn...
