The Navy is "Akin" for a fight, says congressman.
Missouri Congressman Todd Akin (R - Town & Country) released a letter yesterday he sent to the Secretary of the Navy, demanding that the Navy abolish plans to allow its chaplains to perform same-sex marriages.

The Navy is considering the issue following the repeal last December of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. More than 60 fellow congressmen have signed onto Akin's letter.

On his website, Akin argues that allowing chaplains to oversee gay marriages would violate the Defense of Marriage Act signed into law in 1996.

"The law of the land is that the federal government defines marriage as between one man and one woman," says Akin, chair of the House Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. "This new guidance from the Navy clearly violates the law. While our president may not like this law, it is unbelievable that our Navy would issue guidance that clearly violates this law. While a state may legalize same-sex marriage, federal property and federal employees, like Navy chaplains, should not be used to perform marriages that are not recognized by federal law."

C'mon, Todd. Don't ya know that a gay wedding is every sailor's dream? Well, these seamen anyway.

It's time, I think, to call the GOP by their true name: the Christian Nationalist Party.

Something tells me Todd Akin might be the next conservative politician to be caught in a homosexual encounter scandal.....

one minute, Conservatives are all about religion in the government (Ten Commandments in court, prayer in schools), the next, they want to try to outlaw certain religious ceremonies in the Navy. Let each faith decide their feeling on same-sex marriage, and remember that a chaplain is a chaplain first and a federal employee second.

So basically that's all the NeoCons have to hang their hats on nowadays. Obama is simply kicking their asses and they only have these silly wedge issues to pander. Good luck with the next election guys if that is all ya'll have to offer anymore.

Doesn't the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 violate certain unalienable rights guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence ?

And I want to take this time to thank the Democratic state reps who again voted for overriding the Governor's veto of redistricting, so that I'm now in this idiot's district in 2012.

Must be cold, dark, and mean to be Akin.
