University City to Recognize Same-Sex Relationships

Domestic partners in U. City can have their cake and eat it too!
University City last night became the first of St. Louis County's 91 municipalities to recognize domestic partnerships.

In a 6-1 vote, University City council members put into law a measure that allows same-sex partners certain privileges afforded married couples. Those include visitation rights in hospitals and jails and the power to make health care decisions for their loved ones in the event of an emergency.

The measure calls for University City to establish a Domestic Partnership Registry, in which couples would provide the city with the names and contact information of their partner. Wording in the the new law also makes it applicable for non-married heterosexual couples living together.

Among the people opposed to the ordinance is State Representative Cynthia Davis (R - O'Fallon) who drove in from St. Charles last night to urge the council to keep University City "family friendly" by rejecting the measure. (This from the same lady who tried to pass a bill to allow guns in churches.)

St. Louis, Columbia and Kansas City are the three other Missouri municipalities with similar laws on the books as University City.
