June Rainfall Could Triple St. Louis Average for Month

Area rain gauges runneth over in June.
Surprise! It's raining -- again.

The National Weather Service warns that St. Louis is likely to see strong thunderstorms mixed with heavy rains throughout the day and into the evening. Today's precipitation could help triple the region's normal rainfall for June of 3.7 inches. Already we've experienced over eight inches of rain for the month, thanks -- in no small part -- to the 4.5 inches that pummeled the region over a span of an hour or so Saturday night into Sunday morning.

The saturated ground means that today's rain (already at half-an-inch) could produce flash flooding and bring swollen rivers ever higher. Along the St. Louis riverfront, the Mississippi is already a foot-and-a-half above its 30-foot flood stage. The Missouri River at St. Charles is about a foot shy of its 25-foot flood level.

The good news? Once we get past today there's no rain in the forecast until Sunday and Monday.
