3 Reasons Why Medical Marijuana is Junk Science, According to Feds

Medical marijuana: You're outta here!
On Friday the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services at long last responded to an 11-year-old petition that asked the federal government to reconsider its stance on the use of medical marijuana.

The ruling last week likely won't encourage Missouri to join the more than one dozen states and the District of Columbia, which have approved some use of marijuana for treating illnesses in recent years. In sticking to its guns, the DHHS cited three key reasons why it believes medical marijuana is crackpot science. They are:
1. Marijuana has a high potential for abuse. The DHHS evaluation and the additional data gathered by DEA show that marijuana has a high potential for abuse.

2. Marijuana has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. According to established case law, marijuana has no ''currently accepted medical use'' because: The drug's chemistry is not known and reproducible; there are no adequate safety studies; there are no adequate and well-controlled studies proving efficacy; the drug is not accepted by qualified experts; and the scientific evidence is not widely available.

3. Marijuana lacks accepted safety for use under medical supervision. At present, there are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved marijuana products, nor is marijuana under a New Drug Application (NDA) evaluation at the FDA for any indication. Marijuana does not have a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions. At this time, the known risks of marijuana use have not been shown to be outweighed by specific benefits in well-controlled clinical trials that scientifically evaluate safety and efficacy.

In response, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) said the DHHS ruling reaffirmed the the administration's "flat Earth position" regarding the medical properties of cannabis.

It's worth noting that federal regulators only weighed in on the issue after NORML and others sued the government in May, demanding that it comment on the petition first filed in 2002. Medical marijuana advocates now say they'll appeal the DHHS ruling to the courts where they hope to get a fairer hearing.

It's a good enough reason because it HELPS PEOPLE IN PAIN and is a much more controllable dose than nabalone and other synthetic derivatives. Trust me, as soon as any of you or these moron politicians legislating our lives need medical marihuana, they will get it.And the economic benefits to the country are a no-brainer. Legislating morality at the expense of human lives is disgusting, and the "gateway drug" shriekers are often the DUI arrests and drunken wifebeaters behind closed doors.

Is it a good enough reason to legalize something because other questionable similar things are legal? Shouldn't we be sure that this does help and not in fact harm before we allow easier access to it?

Now if we want to talk about how much it would help the economy I may argue the other way.

"Marijuana lacks the physical and psychological dependence liability associated with other intoxicants--including tobacco and alcohol.  Very few cannabis users voluntarily seek drug treatment for pot "addiction".  The majority of marijuana smokers in drug treatment were arrested for pot possession and ordered into treatment as a condition of their probation"-  Marijuana is Safer So Why Are We Driving People To Drink?, Fox, Armentano, Tvert.

In 1999, the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine published a "comprehensive federal study".  -"[M]illions of Americans have tried Marijuana, but most are not regular users [and] few marijuana users become dependant on it." -Marijuana Is Safer, Fox, Armentano, Tvert.

Basically, one book can blow all of these reasons out of the water.

Marijuana is Safer So Why Are We Driving People To Drink? contains 16 pages of notes all peppered with scientific studies from the United States and all over the world, all with the same general results.  Marijuana is safer than alcohol, politicians never listen, and society will continue to suffer from the lethal effects of alcohol.

I hope that the RFT staff will read up on this amazing, educational book and help spread the good word.

This is a bunch of shit and flies in the face of countless physicans who know of the great effects marijuana has for pain, nausea and loss of appetite. If there wasn't medical benefits from smoking pot, then why are there so many states with legalized marijuana for medical purposes and just what is the risk involved from smoking pot? Munchies! And also note, that NO ONE has ever overdosed or died from smoking God's gift to mankind. I could go on and on about the benefits of pot, but I need to take a break and do some bong hits.!!!. These self-rightous bible thumpers need to losen up. The government needs to legalize pot and reap the tax benefits. Remember: Marijuana is the second biggest cash crop in the United States after corn!! Mankind has smoked pot for thousands of years and will continue to do so until the end of time.

This makes no sense.  It isnt science because no one has approved it, yet they wont approve it since no one else has..Yet they let tobacco get a free pass.I think the real reason they do not want to pass it is thanks to big pharma not being able to make any cash on it since everyone could in theory grow it.  It would possibly mean no more oxys and their like.

They are only talking about smoking it. Not the THC or cannabinoids.

You cannot guarantee the strength of either of those components in weed.

And for it to be a medicine means it would have to be controlled like one. And it could not be a smoked product.

If fact you all want to just get high, and making a medicine means it will not be available to you anyway.

It also exposes the fact your lying which makes your fight that much harder to win.

Actually I very rarely, if ever, smoke.  That being said I have seen the good sides of the use of cannabis.  And there are a lot.  It does help deaden the pain without the side effects of, say, any other drug out there, with the exception of causing a rise in appetite, which is not a bad thing.

There are alos herbal medicines(using the term loosely) that are not regulated by the FDA. Those can not and are not tested for a guaranteed strength. Yet these are still sold all around the USA.

Eyebright herb can cause hallucinations. Valerian causes symtpoms like marijuana. Same as Kava Kava. I can go on for hours about what herbs can mess with your perception of reality!

What about tobacco? That has no other use but to kill! Yet that is legal.

Alcohol? Lets see. It causes many of deaths. Causes serious damage to the body. Yet it is legal.

What about paint? Should that not be a controlled substance?

How about oxygen? It can cause a high like effect on the body. It is also explosive. It is addictive.(I can not quit oxygen and I doubt you can as well)

Why not legalise it and save some lives? If people could smoke pot legally. There would be a lot less paint huffers and crackheads. Hell there would be less drunks as well.
