Governor Nixon Signs Into Law Bill to Outlaw Bath Salts, Synthetic Marijuana

Smoke up, Johnny. You have until August 28 to do so legally.

​Governor Jay Nixon signed into law last Thursday House Bill 641, making it illegal to sell or possess synthetic cocaine known as "bath salts" and new strains of synthetic marijuana, such as K3, that were introduced following the passage of a similar law last July.

In a statement last week, Nixon's office said that HB 641 "provides law enforcement with a new tool to stay ahead of criminals, by eliminating the need to seek new legislation each time a new derivative of these drugs is developed."

The bill outlaws any cannabinoid compound developed now or in the future. Those caught with more than 35 grams of such drugs could be charged with a Class C felony. Amounts less than that could land you with a misdemeanor charge.

The bill's sponsor, Ward Franz (R - West Plains) tells Daily RFT this morning that he hoped to get an emergency clause attached to the legislation that would make it effective upon the governor's signature. Instead, the law won't go into effect until August 28.

Still, Franz is content that his legislation will have a "positive impact" on the health and safety of Missourians. Franz adds that he's already heard from police that the main distributor of synthetic marijuana and cocaine in his hometown is preparing to shut down and move out of state.
