Rush Limbaugh Pushing Tea in Joplin

Categories: Community

Rush Limbaugh is cashing in on the tea party schtick with, yes, tea.
As if that tornado wasn't bad enough, this weekend, the town of Joplin, Missouri, got a visit from Rush Limbaugh.

The bombastic radio host (and Missouri native) was there to promote a new product called Two if By Tea -- a bottled ice tea which gets its name from Paul Revere's secret signal and relies heavily on Founding Fathers gimmickry for its marketing plan. (Seriously: Check out its website; they're laying this stuff on thick.)

Randy Turner, the Joplin teacher behind the Turner Report blog, has posted a video of Limbaugh's remarks.

In the video, the Cape Girardeau native mentions the tea only briefly. "We have this new little company we started -- we wanted to bring a truckload in. But we made sure -- we didn't want to intrude; we wanted to add to and be part of your event tonight -- to show a little gratitude and keep the spotlight on your city," he says around the 4:30 mark of Turner's video.
It's hard to tell whether the crowd is tolerating El Rushbo or eating up his remarks. At the end, though, he does pledge an ongoing commitment to the city, which suffered through one of the deadliest tornadoes in recent history on May 22:

"People say, 'What are you going to do? What I'm going to do is keep the spotlight on Joplin, Missouri.' ... You have a great future. You are Americans. We are all Americans. Remember, there's no stopping you -- you define it -- you can be the best you can. Go for it!"

I am not a "fan" of Lindbaugh although I used to listen to him on my way to my graduate classes because it was all my VW AM radio could pull in.  He used to make me so mad I would have to pull over, but he DID make me think--about what I believe and WHY I believe the way I do.  His appearance in Joplin was, pointedly, apolitical.  He even made it clear to the audience members who encouraged him to make partisan statements that he "wasn't going there."  As mentioned before, he did compensate the other vendors but I don't see anything mentioned about the personal contribution he made.  Oh, that's right...he didn't want it publicized.  But he did.  This isn't about political agendas, even when a politician might like it to be.  We are too busy trying to figure out how to take back our lives to give a tinker's damn why money is being donated.   He stepped out of his "shock radio" persona for a few hours and just shared with us some much-needed celebration of life!  You may not like him, but you are going to have to find another reason to bash him.....he did a good thing!

Go Rush Go!  We tried to this same thing in Japan after the tsunami.  We were introducing a new bottled water called Amber Waves and our CMO came up with a similar plan--instead of paying the media to launch our product, let's take our product launch to the media.  In addition, we could create a bit of good will for the brand by giving some money to the victims.  Unfortunately, the Japanese government thought that the idea was in bad taste.  Apparently, they don't understand capitalism.

Sara Fenske and all you whining lefties in St. Louis bear no resemblance to the fine, resourceful, patriotic people of Joplin -- If the tornado had hit StL instead of Joplin, you'd all be crying for FEMA to save you, rather than buckling down and doing it yourself. You all make me sick.

There is a fine line between philanthropy and marketing. Very fine. A lot of St. Louisinstitutions cross it a lot, including the Cardinals. There is incessant bragging abouttheir charity work.

As someone living in the middle of this horrendous disaster, to say "As if the tornado wasn't bad enough, Rush came to Joplin..." makes me sick! Comparing a person giving away an 18 wheeler full of tea & telling us that we are the epitome of america... To a monster tornado that killed more than 150 people is such a poor excuse for an article. I don't agree with the liberal philosophies, but if a key personality was going to give Joplin ANYTHING & tell us all we are doing right, I wouldn't put him down. What a sad outlook on life. Get yourselves to Joplin, tour the devasation, then see if we could have used a little pep talk. Also, we WON a contest from submitted letters.

Kristen, your point about the contest is well taken. Also, for the record, RFT reporter Albert Samaha did go to Joplin three weeks after the tornado; while surely nothing he reported on is news to anyone who's been living through it, you can read his observations here: http://blogs.riverfronttimes.c... or check out his photos of the devastation here: http://www.riverfronttimes.com...

I know St. Louis has Joplin in its thoughts and is rooting for everyone living through this nightmare; we may not agree on a brand of iced tea, but we can agree on that.

Nice joke connecting the tornadoe and Rush, Sarah! You libs can't leave your, if you don't think my way I'll trash you, views for 1 second. If a lib showed up and did something nice, I wouldve complimented him or her, not tore them down. Sarah, to make a joke about something so tragic should make you look in the mirror and see what kind of person you really are.

Sarah...   Maybe you should just cover liberal events so you can be objective.

As some one that has gone through a tornado, you need something to brighten your spirits. What Rush did was trying to do something nice for Joplin. What I got out of the speech was what makes America great. Everyone is intitled to there opinion, even liberals, which what makes our nation great. Hard working people have banned together to help Joplin get back on their feet and Rush did something nice for a ravaged city. I haven't heard or seen many liberals coming to our aid. If more liberals quit bitching and help, would be a start.

what a snarky article

Where you see a devistated community, Rush sees a marketing oportunity to launch a new product! See? That's called taking a negative and turning it into positive cash flow! What's crass about that?

Joanne

He GAVE a truckload of tea away to the residents of Joplin!  It was not a marketing opportunity.  He even GAVE money to the other vendors who would be affected by the FREE tea being distributed so they would not be negatively affected.  Of course, Little Sarah, the author of this article, failed to mention those minor facts.  What is wrong with you libs?  Always trying to denigrate any positive things a conservative does to help his fellow Americans.  If you are really brave, you will listen to Rush for 6 weeks so you can have some idea about what he is actually talking about, instead of getting your information about him from biased liberals in the media who lie about him and all the rest of us conservatives who actually want our country to prosper, and to have freedom for EVERYONE!

Leave it to a liberal to try and twist something good, into bad, do they ever have a good day

My Dear Ms. Sarah Fenske Your didn't pay attention. Your blinding prejudice got in your way, just like it does for all knee jerk leftys. Go listen to him for a month or two if you can open your ears and mind.

I listen every chance I get.  But he is still a righty propagandist who would kill himself before complimenting anything a lefty does or critisize anything by the right.  How realistic is that?  Before you go off on me as a naive lefty (I am liberal), let me say that I'm a moderate one who has also been in the Army for twenty three, and been on five combat deployments for this country that Rush says us libs hate and want to see destroyed.  Really, after saying things like that, do really think I will ever take him seriously?

A great effort to help Joplin stay in America's minds to enhance a complete rebuild/recovery from such an awesome demonstration of mother natures destructive power. Good choice made by a powerful individual who didn't HAVE to do anything.....

I'm not impressed by the effort. It's marketing/pr and the ultimate goal is about making sales.

by doing what, giving them a bunch of tea? and then being all, "oh, i'm not trying to outshine Joplin, just because i happen to be the most awesome, powerful man in America. this is about all of you!" just give a speech of support, donate the tea *silently*, and be done with it.

Thomas Payne

He did give a speech of support..you should look it up on youtube...then you should load a truck with your ignorance and just go away...

Thomas Payne

Arguing with a liberal is easy...but a waste of time. Load it back up Kitty!

Kitty

i know he did, but by suggesting that he and his tea could somehow intrude on a national tragedy seems bizarre and self-aggrandizing. i suggest you use some Common Sense and not call complete strangers ignorant.

Thomas Payne

Gosh ....what a jerk...probably only increased the audience and revenue generated at the event by 500%. How selfish of him...he should have just stayed away and not given such an up lifting speech about self dependence and the American spirit...I'll bet it ruined your liberal day...good!

He should take that tea and shove it up his ample ass. Contribute cash if he really cares. What a fart-knocker.

Razzuria
Razzuria

Actually, he did give cash.  His wife had an idea where, since they were giving away free refreshments, to keep from diminishing the profiting of the local vendors at the event, Rush and his wife handed out envelopes of cash to each of those envelopes with the explaination that these were to help them too.  According to her, the vendors were at first suspicious but then were overjoyed when they caught on to the whole point of this.

Ok now lets all Rush out to get some more tea!  What a JOKE this idiot is.

Lisa Quigley-Moon

Really? He is an idiot for trying to be kind & to keep a spotlight on Joplin. Have you seen Joplin in person? It's awful. Why don't you get your head out of the sand for 5 seconds & drop the politics for a minute & just see it for the kindness that it is. Your the joke   The media  "the writer of this article included" can try as you may but you are not changing enough minds. People do still want to be free. I could care less if you want to live on the government dole but why don't you make it Cuba's or Venezuela's government.
