Top Missouri GOP Consultant Hasn't Paid His Taxes

As the main political consultant to Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder -- and a key strategist for the Missouri Republican Party -- David Barklage preaches the gospel of financial responsibility and accountability.

But in his own finances, Barklage has hardly lived up to those tenets: Records show he's racked up liens for more than $560,000 in back taxes.

A series of tax liens filed in Cape Girardeau County from 1995 to April 2011 by both the IRS and the Missouri Department of Revenue suggests that Barklage and his companies have shorted both federal and state government repeatedly and consistently. An RFT analysis of the tax liens suggests that Barklage's debt to the federal government totals $473,102, while he owes the state of Missouri $87,996, mostly in unpaid income tax.

And he's racked up those debts even while making big bucks from the Missouri Republican Party -- as well as Lt. Governor Peter Kinder's political campaign.

Kinder, who's currently facing a political storm over contacts with an ex-stripper/Penthouse pet first reported by the RFT, attended the same church as Barklage in Cape Girardeau. (Other members included the Limbaugh family -- yes, that Limbaugh family.) Kinder later gave Barklage his first political job, as an intern for the late U.S. Representative Bill Emerson. (Barklage did not respond to our requests for comment.)

And these days, if you call Kinder's campaign, you get Barklage's voice mail. The lieutenant governor -- widely believed to be plotting a challenge to Democratic Governor Jay Nixon next year -- has paid Barklage and his companies (Strategic Communications and the Barklage Company) $140,000 since organizing his campaign committee in June 2009.

And it's not just Kinder hiring him for political work. Barklage has been credited as the architect of the Republicans' takeover in the Missouri House of Representatives in 2000. More recently, from June 2009 to July 2010, the state GOP paid Barklage's company Strategic Communications $94,500 for "research," according to the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Those payments happened even while Barklage was racking up fresh tax liens. From 2009 to the present, the state department of revenue has filed tax liens against Strategic Communications, and Barklage as an individual, totaling $57,317. He accrued another $27,408 in federal tax liens during that period.

We've got calls out to everybody (Barklage, Kinder, the state GOP); we'll update this post if we hear back. In the meantime, we've attached copies of a few recent liens filed against Barklage below.

Hey RFT,  where is the article about Claire McCaskill not paying her taxes?????  She needed to get threatened with a lawsuit before she would pay what she owes.

David Barklage is also a registered lobbyist for the unholy Goldman Sachs owned Red Light Scamera Firm, American Traffic Solutions.

Regardless of the Kinder association, it is telling that even as Barklage evades paying his own taxes, he is part of the "brain trust" trying to help the aerotropolis effort plunder a few hundred million dollars in Missouri tax dollars. Add Barklage's name to the rest of the scumbags involved in that boondoggle-in-the-making. Here's the link to the documents that the Show Me Institute has recovered through Freedom of INformation Act requests establishing the active role of Barklage (and disgraced Bond cronie Jason Van Eaton) in shaping the aerotropolis legislation:

I don't remember seeing this kind of coverage when it was revealed time after time, person after person, that top officials in Barrack Obama's administration didn't pay their taxes. In fact, there are more who DIDN'T pay in Secretary positions than those who DID pay. Further, Barklage's private life and tax situation has zero to do with Peter Kinder except in the context of trying to smear Kinder by association. This is not to condone tax evasion, it is to point out once again the hypocrisy of the press.

So add Barklage to the key figures in the Aerotropolis boondoggle that has proven to be nothing but a rogues gallery. A child pornography enthusiast running an airline, a disgraced former Bond staffer running the Hub Commission, Paul McKee and now Barklage. No wonder Barklage thought giving away tax credits to McKee was such a great idea - all of them believe taxes and investment risks are for the little people and not for fat cats and their political cronies

This isn't news to any vendor who delivered product to the convenience store he used to own by the university in Cape. Didn't pay his bills then either.  Guy always relied on Mommy to save him.

The audacity of these politicians continues to amaze...do they really think that in this day and age people won't find out?  I wish the voting public were more educated because sadly, this type of double-talk doesn't effect election outcomes the way it should.

All those in favor of a vote of no confidence in all politicians and the U.S. political system say AYE!!!

Yes, an alt-weekly in St. Louis should really have devoted more resources to covering appointments to Obama's administration.

Also, how come the RFT isn't doing a better job covering the war in Libya and aftermath of the Japan earthquake?

Come on guys, what do you think we come to a local news outlet for? To read about local stuff? Hahaha.

She paid her balance. Go tell Kinder to stop blowing our money on hotels and amenities. Time for this guy to resign and either pay up or lose his property.
