Clarence Temple: Man With Murderous Past Takes Hostages, Kills Himself in North County

Police found Clarence Temple dead around 6:45 a.m. today.
A hostage situation in unincorporated north St. Louis County ended this morning with the suspect taking his own life.

According to St. Louis County Police, 39-year-old Clarence Temple forced his way into a home in the 6600 block of Chesapeake Drive (right) around 4 a.m. today and held three adults hostage at gunpoint.

The victims -- two males and a female -- eventually escaped the home with one of the men cutting himself on glass from a sliding door that Temple may have shattered to gain entrance to the home. Once the hostages escaped, Temple allegedly took his own life with the handgun.

Police say Temple's ex-girlfriend lived in the home and had an order of protection on Temple and was scheduled to go to court today to ask for a full order of protection. Court records indicate that Temple, of the 4300 block of Chouteau in St. Louis, has a violent past.

In 1997 he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, armed criminal action and assault in a 1994 homicide in St. Louis. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In 1992 he also pleaded guilty in St. Louis to unlawful use of a handgun.

He's dead.  Good.  What infuriates me is the number of times these people have to pass through the justice system before they are finally killed, put in prison for life, or in extremely rare cases reformed.

I'm a former CA resident and a big believer in the 3 strikes law but I believe it doesn't go far enough.  For felonies it should be 2 strikes.  You screw up a second time your in for life period.  You commit a felony while in prison...we kill you.  I'm all for the benefit of the doubt but not when there's a boatload of previous case law involving someone's bad behavior.  Society's mercy should not be limitless.

All I can say is WOW...you are a prime example of how the US education system is beyond f**cked.

Temple's death is a windfall and doubly so because he took himself out and saved us all the cost of CS gas and bullets needed to extract him during a prolonged siege.  If only we could be so lucky everytime.  According to his past he shouldn't have been on the streets much less above ground.

People like you get jury duty, and guys like this go free, thanks! Why don't you go to casenet and look this guy up before opening your mouth...here is what I know, a guy with a restraining order AND a violent past broke into his ex girlfriends apartment at 4am with a gun and held people hostage, he didn't make them coffee, he held them hostage! THEN he shot himself, That's an isolated incident that has no bearing on the general public to you? This guy is not dangerous? None of my friends died last night because they were all in bed or getting ready for work at 4am, not packing heat and busting a patio door in to get hostages! THEY are good, stable, citizens who pose no danger to the general public, Mr Temple isn't/wasn't.Reread your post, you have NO right to refer to anyone as "uneducated and ignorant", you can't put a sentence together without 10 grammatical errors.

you can judge someone off of their past, but our justice system obviously did not view him as a threat or he would not have been on the streets. although past allegations may lead you to believe one thing, you have no true support behind your comments "Oogly." It's a shame that you have the time to comment on an article that does not in anyway pertain to you as an individual. In some instances, these events are isolated incidents that, in fact, do not have any bearing on the general public. Get your facts straight before passing judgement. if you think you know everything about a story by merely reading the River Front Times, you are not truly educated at all. Plus, your use of cursing makes you sound completely uneducated and ignorant. it shows how much the US education system worked for you--not much.
