Project:Design! Finalists: Meet Brittany Davidson
Next Tuesday, October 11, is the start of 2011's St. Louis Fashion Week. For the seventh year, Brown Shoe will be presenting Project:Design!, a competition featuring the work of six designers based out of, or near, St. Louis.
The lines of the top six designers, chosen online by the public, will be featured in a fashion show October 11 at Fashion Week. Judges will then choose a winner, who will receive prizes including a consultation with 963Collective and coverage in ALIVE Magazine.
Daily RFT is highlighting one finalist each day until October 11, showcasing the best talent this area has to offer.
Brittany M. Davidson, 23, of BMDesigns, lives in Kansas City. Davidson started her company in 2009 but has been sewing since she was three.
What does your line look like?
I like mixing patterns that are kind of unexpected. I like surprise cutouts and different structured, architectural pieces and mixing the soft with the hard. My pieces are always really, really feminine.
Who do you design for?
Probably women who are in their 20s or 30s. The woman who is on-the-go and has a job, but wants to look good. It's kind if bringing the city life to anybody. You don't have to live in the city to look like a pretty girl.
Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
Life experiences, mostly. If I go traveling, the culture or the colors of a certain place, anything like that, I draw the most inspiration from. Everyday people with independent style I can draw creativity from. I like the '50s and the '20s because they are ultra-feminine and a bit more dressy.
Do you make the clothes in your own wardrobe?
I used to make a lot of my clothes, but now I have a full-time job so it's not always possible. I like Forever 21 because it's so inexpensive. I like buying more things that I can change up and play with rather than just one really expensive outfit.
Is that what your line resembles?
Probably not. I think my line is a little bit more European-inspired and probably a little more expensive-looking. I'm just a cheapskate when it comes to dressing myself.
What was the process like getting into 'Project:Design!'?
I had to send in my portfolio and my pieces, and the judges chose the top 25. Then they left it up to the public and everyone had to vote, and the top six were selected to go onto Fashion Week.
What do you hope to get out of 'Project:Design!'?Mainly the experience. Of course, the exposure -- I'm going to be reaching people that I wouldn't have otherwise reached because I'm from Kansas City. Being able to show in St. Louis will be pretty cool.
Where do you want to go with fashion design?
I'd like to have my own stores. If the world was perfect, I'd like to have my own design house. I definitely hope to have women's wear store one day at some point.
