Sanford-Brown College Slapped With Dozen-Plus Lawsuits

Sanford-Brown-College.jpg
In the last six months, Sanford-Brown College has been hit with more than a dozen lawsuits from students claiming that the college and its parent company are running a high-pressure sales racket cleverly disguised as higher ed.

The for-profit college, which has outlets in Fenton, Hazelwood and St. Peters, is owned by Career Education Corporation of Schaumberg, Illinois. Since June, at least eighteen highly similar lawsuits have been filed against both entities in federal court here in St. Louis -- with another suit filed in federal court just last week.

The lawsuits, filed by attorneys Gary Burger of Cantor Burger and Dirk Hubbard of Hubbard & Ardebili, allege that the college and its owner have an "ongoing pattern and practice of deceptive conduct," which includes enrollment quotas for its admissions staff, outright misrepresentations and bait-and-switch techniques designed to pressure prospective students into signing up for courses.

"The way they get these people to sign up as students is with high-pressure sales reps," Burger tells Daily RFT. "They have quotas. And they're instructed to play on people's emotions to get them hooked in -- and to get them to apply for student loans." But when the students graduate, thousands of dollars in debt, there's no $40,000-a-year waiting for them, as they'd been promised: "They find the representations made to them just aren't true."

Elizabeth Mushill, an attorney at Husch Blackwell representing Sanford-Brown, did not respond to our request for comment yesterday.

The plaintiffs claim that they spent thousands of dollars on highly specialized training -- only to learn the course credits didn't transfer elsewhere and that there were no opportunities for employment in the fields they'd been studying.

"This is not just a function of the bad economy," Burger says. "It's been true for a long time."

The most recent case was filed on behalf of a former student named Christina Chastain.
After being assured that Sanford-Brown would find her a job in Medical Coding and Billing, Chastain spent $15,000 on courses and graduated with a degree. But not only was she unable to find full-time employment -- she also learned that none of her credits would transfer to St. Charles Community College.

The suit cites testimony from the former president of the Sanford-Brown College in Hazelwood. According to the suit, the president testified that the company's "concern over finances seemed to force admissions people not to tell the truth about what the outcomes were going to be for the students and what they could expect upon graduation" and that "admissions advisors were sales persons with tremendous pressure placed on them to get prospective students to enroll."

The suit alleges fraudulent misrepresentation, fraud by concealment and omission and violation of the merchandising practices act .

Nationally, there's been a movement to force for-profit colleges to clean up their act -- or lose access to the federal loans that are their bread and butter.

How many lawsuits are out there aimed at the Georgia Techs and NYUs of the world?  They also have a large number of students that either cannot find employment or are underemployed!  The economy sucks and you have to be able to sell yourself  -- that is the bottom line.  There is no need to show your racist card, Pokey!  It does not help these graduates to have to deal with folks like you on a regular basis!

Tishg34, you will get hired based on YOUR reputation, not on others, nor a name attached to a school.   Are you kidding???  Look at how many students attend vocational community colleges...they don't get in based on the name of the community college, but on the person's grades, positive critiques from internships and most importantly...WHO YOU KNOW!!!!  Jobs don't "magically" appear just because they went to "Harvard" or some other "full of promises" school  Anybody with an ounce of intelligence knows that.

Sanford Brown is full of it period i would like to sue them if someone would help me.No one wants to hire me strictly because of Sanford Brown and their students reputation. My time and money are wasted on trying to do something positive.

That goes to show what kind of person you are, which is igorant. All types of people sign up for those schools and race has nothing to do with it. A matter of fact I was in a class with a couple of people who was working full time and trying to attend SBI for a program that they thought was going to enhance their lives. With all that said I have been in school since I left the scumbag of a school; witha 3.0 gpa and will be finish school, so that last bit was to let you know that some of us can at least get in a reall college. Peace & Blessings

Some people aren't aware of the credits they receive from sanford brown. However, on the other hand I quit going there when a few years ago because I was informed that if I have a problem with the teachers hkeep my mouth shut until I get my final grade for that class. I will never keep my mouth shut if I'm being done some type of harm; for an example the tution money they got anyway. To top the matter off they had some one call me asking for $9000 to which I informed he to tell the company I will never pay them and they are lucky they got some of the money from the school that wasn't completely returned.

i was told that some colleges will transfer credits  but not all of them.  i am in the polysomnography program and if i wanted to transfer to fontbonne my poly classes would count as electives just because they dont have PSG program over there.  my gen ed classes would transfer as well.  Ts person was misinformed and depended on one college to accept/not accept her credits. students who decide to further their education also have the responsibility to check out other colleges to see if their credits are able to transfer. it is not all up to the college who deal with thousands of students a year.  and to back sanford brown a little bit you lso have students who take out loans and then drop out and dont pay back the loans.  just like any other college you have the option to take out a loan.  its simple if you dont have money upfront how else are you going to pay for more education?  when i signed up i was not bullied into taking loans.  my fasfa did cover the whole bill but it covered most of it.  taking out  loan is a commitment im willing to have to further my education.  if i went to a university id be paying alot more money back on a loan.  furthermore its good to do some research on the program that you enlist.  right now it would not be wise to get a degree in medical assisting just because the market is so overwhelmed with medical assisting and would be hard to find a job.  just a few things i felt was neccessary to be said.

I went to the st peters campus from 04-06 and graduated with "honors" and an easily obtainable gpa. I'm a single white intelligent male who was duped into the program by a lot of lies, wont call them false promises cause they aren't. So all of you who think this education is legitimate are not in with reality. I have been in the military, have held several jobs in my related field before enrolling there and now with a degree no one wants to hire me because of my "education". There u have it, schools all over the country are pulling this shit and it has to end..

I attend Sandford Brown in St. Peters and it really sucks, either the teacher think that they know it all, then you have the stupidest teachers as well. The school is very nasty,so are the teachers. I wished that I would of read about Sandford before I started it, I really haven't learned anything since I been there. There have been three decent teachers there, thank god one is there. My finical aid has been late since I've been there. Think about it twice before you go to any Sandford Brown College.

These idiots who fall for Sanford Brown's sweet-talk deserve everything they get. No one made them sign up. They could have easily gone to a public tech school or university. But no, they wanted to take the easy way and look where it got them. That's their own fault. The school preys on single moms and white trash girls who can't into a real college.

I attended Sanford-Brown Institute in Dallas, Tx and was told they would help me find a job after completion and graduation. They didnt even offer me my cma certification, I had to go do it and pay for it myself, not with tuition money. I am now going to be in default in less than a month and do not have a job as a medical assistant. I have sent my resume to so many places and never get a responce from any of them. I would really like to file a lawsuit against them but dont really know how to go about it. Any suggestions?

These places are all ripoffs. Only way they stay in business is the politicians they buy off.

No doubt these complaints are from negros that are both untrainable and unemployable. BUT There's hope! They will be employed by the Government to prevent Whites from getting equal employment under the law.

I wish I could offer you a suggestion but I'm in the same boat. I graduated f from Sanford Brown in Milwaukee. They promised us that they would find us a job after graduation. I've gone to career services and on the last meeting I had they stopped helping me because a bilingual student came in. he then proceed to help the student and only gave me a print out of clinics in my area. I now am going to a new school for medical administrative assistant and none of my credits transferred. I would love to find out how to sue Sanford Brown.

If you can't transfer credits and the school isn't specialized, like a trade school with certifications, it's a scam. The teachers at these places are encouraged to pass everyone regardless of quality (and sometimes quantity/effort) of work to keep the money rolling in. With the English and grammar used on some of the essays that these students write, you wonder how they managed to make it out of jr. high, much less get a GED or complete high school. The diplomas mean jack shit in the job market and their job placement statistics are often skewed. There's a reason why you'll see 3 Sanford-Brown commercials during a half-hour TV show but rare when you'd see one for a *real* college.

One thing though, I don't buy her story that she was unaware that her credits wouldn't transfer. I can't imagine one student who would apply for loans that wouldn't be concerned with that.

@Guest I was unaware that my credits wouldn't transfer.  When I asked about it they said they would, now I didn't name specific schools but at the time I didn't know what school I would be attending for my Bachelors.  I just knew I wanted my bachelors so I asked the rep and she said "oh yea that is no problem at all, our credits transfer" yes it answers my question in a vague way, but most people don't ask.  Ok so where exactly will they transfer?  My fault and I am up a creek right now, I have finally found a college that will accept them in another state, luckily its all online and I have googled the crap out of that school looking for bad things lol.  Let's just say if I knew then what I know now believe me I wouldn't have attended SBC.  Live and Learn... It's just an expensive lesson.

@Mince23 @Kingrome1 Cantor and Burger are who I am currently working with now in a lawsuit.  They won their last one against Sanford Brown.

And to all of you who say you can get a job if you sell yourself right and made good grades.  I graduated with a 3.8, had awesome references, and have a certificate in MRI and still cannot get an x-ray job.  Can't say its my interviewing skills as I cannot even get an interview, its not a crappy resume cause I have had it looked at by multiple people including people from the school who are there for that reason.  Oh and there credits don't transfer anywhere except to very few schools unless they are another "For Profit" school.  Not to mention the Admissions rep did actually lie about a few things.  So if you have not attended the school you honestly should have nothing to say because you don't know...

@Kingrome1 Um all you fellas up there... I know that Cantor and Burger are willing to talk to SBC students from all over the country, I know its a far cry, but so far they have been pretty good at getting somewhere with their clients lawsuits. The number to the office is 314-542-9999.... Take a shot, maybe they can help you or at least point you in the right direction....
