Union Workers to Join Occupy St. Louis for Major Demonstration Today

Today's march promises to be several times larger than Occupy STL's first demonstration (above) on October 1.
Several hundred -- perhaps as many as a thousand -- union workers are expected to join members of the Occupy St. Louis movement this afternoon for a massive march through downtown.

Demonstrators will depart from Kiener Plaza at 3:30 and walk to the Bank of America buildings, where they'll protest what they see as the financial institution's unethical lending practices.

"You could apply similar complaints to any of the big Wall Street banks," says Cathy Sherwin, an organizer of today's rally and a communications director for the AFL-CIO. "At a time when joblessness is at a high and people are losing their homes or finding their mortgages underwater, banks are sitting on their reserves and not lending a hand. Here in St. Louis, Bank of America has shown particularly appalling behavior, acting as a sort of foreclosure factory."

From the BofA buildings, the demonstration will move to the Arch grounds where speakers will call on the government to invest more in infrastructure improvements that could generate jobs -- especially for skilled workers who've been left unemployed in the recession.

Sherwin tells Daily RFT that members of every union in St. Louis are expected to be on hand today, including representatives from the UAW, SEIU and AFL-CIO. In the Occupy movement -- which calls on politicians to stop catering to the mega-rich and start paying more attention to the rest of the population (a.k.a. "the 99 percent") -- organized labor has found a group that shares its vision.

"As a labor movement, we're not going to tell someone how to express themselves," says Sherwin. "But what our members have found in talking to the Occupy protesters is that we have a lot of common goals. Today's march is an opportunity to come together as a broad section of people and make those goals heard."

LOL what a fucking joke.  Unions are just as corrupt as corporations and just as guilty as bankrupting taxpayers.

Unions are the reasons that police and firefighter pensions are completely UNSUSTAINABLE.We're paying ridiculous amounts of money to firefighters who sit around the station all day playing X-Box, sleeping, and occasionaly spraying water things.  Then those firefighters get to retire at 40 with a full fucking pension, getting paid 70-80k a year to do NOTHING for the rest of their lives.

Oh but wait, then the firefighters game the system even more by working a bunch of overtime in their last year to boost their pension even higher.

And guess who's paying for all this?! WE ARE.  All because the CORRUPT UNIONS brokered deals with CORRUPT POLITICIANS.

Firefighters aren't heroes people, they're fat lazy pieces of shit suckin the government teat for all they can and bankrupting the state in the process.  Ditto with cops.

Fuck the unions, they're garbage just like wall street and corporate interests.

The "union thugs" ( also cops and firefighters are union members, Einstein) are coming voluntarily to this movement. And you are on the wrong side of history my friend. I suggest a perhaps taking a refresher course in American history at a local community college

When they finally realize that the "1% = 90% jews" then they've finally hit the target. At that point I fully intend to join the protests and be ready to fight! Till then they're still sheep that need a shepard. It's time to clean up the mess the jews have created in America. Give them the option: Leave for Israel voluntarily or swim the distance. Then it's time to slam the borders shut, Grab Julio and Manuel and their duffle bags and weedeaters and escort them across the border. If they resist well......... and hey who's the wiser? They're undocumented anyway so no one really knew they were here. Then it's on to the foreign college students that stayed past their visa, got a small business loan from the guv to open a business. Hang up the "Closed" sign on their business and load them on the boat. Next, yeah not going to be much "pride" left in the queer as folk folks once they get a re-education about staying in the closet.

You know how desperate things are for the protesing members of The Flea Party when they have to call in the union thugs for backup. But what can one expect from the main constituents of the Democratic party?  No wonder Obama's poll numbers are sinking to Titanic levels. But, hey, thats a great thing!

And then on the way out the door the Firefighter passes off their job to one of their family members to insure no new "honest" blood can accidentally get in the door. I agree FUCK THE UNION THUGS!

What the fuck is up with these white supremacist shit stains making these comments here lately? I wonder if they are for real or it's someone trying to cast OWS in a bad light. Is is really your over 50 typical brain damaged stltoday commenter or are we on the verge of having a full out white trash uprising? Multiple pickaxe terror attacks on black teens hatched out of darkest Lemay?

Typical dipshit white supremacist comment; "LOOK OUT!! THE JOOS!! THE JOOS!!"  I just have to laugh at such a clown shoes statement and the knuckle draggers that still make them.

"You Jew-haters are so tiring"

Perhaps but not nearly as tiring as you "un-jew-wise" sheep are.

At least the tea party didn't defecate on cars, trash public places, and get arrested.  If you're going to demonstrate, show some respect while you do it.
