Peter Kinder Will Not Be Running for Governor

Peter Kinder's had a rough year.
Today Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder announced that he will not run for governor. Instead he will seek a third term at his current seat.

On one hand this is mildly surprising considering that he's been considered the GOP front-runner to challenge Governor Jay Nixon in 2012. On the other, there have been plenty of reasons to have seen this coming.

For one, Kinder has been on the wrong end of a series of unflattering headlines involving strip club visits, an allegedly strange relationship with a former stripper, lavish tax-payer funded hotel stays, and Twitter outbursts. At least one donor asked for a refund soon after the stripper controversy erupted. While it is not clear how much the negative attention affected his electability, a September poll by the left-leaning Public Policy Polling showed Kinder 19 points behind Nixon. By comparison, Bill Randles, at the time the only official gubernatorial candidate, trailed Nixon by just two more points, despite low name recognition.

Secondly, earlier this week, St. Louis business man Dave Spence, who was Kinder's frat bro back at Mizzou, announced his candidacy for governor, framing himself as an "alternative to Peter Kinder." Politico reported that this week Kinder was still telling donors that he was planning to run. There were rumors that he would announce his candidacy this weekend. Perhaps Spence knew something we didn't know.

And thirdly, GOP rising star Steve Tilley, current Speaker of the House, dropped out of the race for lieutenant governor, which gave Kinder a safer political alternative to running for governor.

So, as it stands, the GOP primary field consists of Spence and Randles. If the status quo holds, this would be the rare (perhaps refreshing) high-profile race between two men-- a businessman versus a lawyer-- with no experience as elected officials and little name recognition. Which should make for a particularly interesting contest, as both candidates are essentially blank slates with ample room to shape the election's narrative. While the September poll didn't include Spence, it illustrated that most voters are still unsure what to make of Randles. When asked if they had a "favorable" or "unfavorable" opinion of him, three fourths of voters answered "unsure."

A casual stroll through Daily RFT comment sections, though, indicates that Randles seems to be building a passionate Ron Paul-like following, a spirited head start nine months removed from the primary.

The River Front Times will be closed next week to mourn  the loss of  its favorite whipping boy, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder. Grief counsellors are being brought in to help Garrison & Co. deal with this tragic loss. The offices of the RFT will be festooned with black crepe in honor of this tragic occasion.  RTF spokeswoman Sarah Fenske said Editor and Chief Chad Garrison has taken a leave of absence so he can deal with the grief. The rumors about Garrison reportedly attempted suicide are false, Fenske said. "The real downside of Kinder's decision to withdraw from the race is that the forty RFT staffers who worked exclusively on the Kinder story will be laid off and that's why Chad is so very depressed." Fenske went on to say plans are being made by the RFT to establish a memorial next to the statute of Chuck Berry. The memorial, called The Kinder Garden,  will have a reflecting pool and a brass stripper pole festooned with a brass coated pair of Chapman's panties. Nick Phillips will take time from trolling Craigslist Personal Ads to be the emcee of the Garden's dedication at 1 p.m.  November 25th. It is hoped by then Editor Garrison will be able to attend this glorious event. "If Chad isn't released from his padded cell by then, he will make a video statement expressing sorrow for Kinder and praise the valor of all RFT staffers who contributed to the  4,765 articles about Panty Gate," Fenske concluded. It truly is a sad day in Mudville. RIP Peter. You are gone but never forgotten.

Well, I must salute the RFT for bringing down Lt. Gov. Kinder. What started out as a non-story eventually turned into a big media circus that ultimately caused Kinder to drop his bid for governor. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword! I have been a vocal critic of the RFT's relentless coverage of Kinder and that stripper-slut-whore Tammy Chapman. Yet all those anti-Kinder articles finally succeeded in the RFT's efforts to destroy Kinder. For that, I salute the efforts of Garrison & Co. and to The Mouse That Roared.

Well slap me with a daisy. Peter Kinder was more fun than a barrel of gay monkeys at a rodeo.  Some of us were looking forward to him prancing around the Governor's Mansion in his bicycle shorts boozing with his lesbian stripper friends just being outrageous. Poor Peter, left to go down in flaming defeat trying to cling on to the nothing job of LT.

If he's had a rough year he has no one to blame but himself.  The caption under his picture should read "this is what shooting yourself in the foot looks like"
