Authorities in metro East St. Louis are at a loss to explain the murder of the Venice street superintendent over the weekend.

Anthony Matthews, 56, was walking out of his home around 7:30 p.m. Saturday for his part-time job as a security guard at a Brooklyn strip club when he was shot to death by an unknown assailant. The suspect fled on foot and then got into a vehicle waiting for him about a block away.

Police say no one they've interviewed regarding Matthews has had a bad word to say about the deceased. Yesterday Matthews' grieving widow, JoAnn Matthews, told the Post-Dispatch the same.

"We weren't having any trouble with anybody," she said.

Anyone with information regarding Matthews' murder is urged to call the Illinois State Police office at 618-346-3990 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.

Duck ws a father figure, friend, discipliner, justa all around great warm hearted man... my heart hurts to know hes been robbed of his duties, as a friend, husband , employee n most important a father.... we live n a cruel world n I pray that justice is served ... I'm so upset I'd rather the streets do it rather than our so called justice system .... I loved him for the 6 yrs I've known him (I am an entertainer) and we have lost a part of us RIP PAPA DUCK

We all know that he was a good man. You can tell, he was black and worked at a strip club both highly sought after characteristics of a good man.

Could've been worse... could've been a internet commenter that wastes all his time thinking anyone gives a shit about what he hates.

I have also known Duck for 20 years since Fannies Cabaret. Nothing but respect for him. He was always the first to lend a hand to anyone....it was just the way he was. Miss ya already my good friend. :(

I'd guess it was some punk he had to throw out of the club. Duck didn't even talk tough - but he was big enough to back it up if need be. Shocked by this.

Hmmm. An unknown assailant. Let me help the cops ID the perp: Black male, stocky build wearing a hoodie and sweat pants. Left the scene in a old beat up Cadillac. Well, that certainly trims the list of suspects!
