Tammika Hubbard Wins 5th Ward Alderman Seat

Categories: Politics
There will be a new face in city hall Room 230.
Tammika Hubbard is the new 5th Ward Alderman. She took 66 percent of votes in yesterday's special election.

Neither of her opponents came close. Rose Green had twenty percent and Tonya Finley had thirteen percent.

Perhaps this result illustrates the ward's measure of support for developer Paul McKee's NorthSide Regenration project, which Hubbard has backed and Green has criticized.

Or perhaps it illustrates the strength, and/or popularity, of one of St. Louis' political dynasties-- Hubbard's mother Penny is a state rep, her father Rodney is the chairman of the ward's Democratic Central Committee, and her brother Rodney Jr. is a former state rep who has also worked as a lobbyist.

Hubbard was the front-runner from the start. In addition to having the deepest political ties among the candidates, Hubbard unleashed a streamroller of an aldermanic campaign, plastering the ward with far more signs and posters than her opponents, an indication of her heavier war chest. Her fundraiser a few weeks ago featured guests such as the mayor, the aldermanic president, the circuit attorney and the lieutenant governor.

She will fill the seat left open in October when former 5th Ward Alderman April Ford-Griffin stepped down to take a position as director of the city's Civil Rights Enforcement Agency.
