Alyssa Bustamante: Teen Describes How She Murdered Neighbor

Bustamante admits strangling and stabbing victim.
Alyssa Bustamante, the mid-Missouri teenager in jail for two years on charges that she murdered her 9-year-old neighbor because she "wanted to know what it felt like" to kill someone, pleaded guilty yesterday.

The confession came as prosecutors reduced their first-degree murder charge to second-degree murder. Instead of serving a mandatory life term in prison, the now 17-year-old Bustamante could get out in as few as ten years.

As part of her plea, Bustamante told the court yesterday how she killed neighbor Elizabeth Olten back on October 21, 2009. Bustamante told the judge that she "strangled her" (with her hands) and then stabbed the girl in the chest with a knife and slit her throat.

Bustamante then buried the Elizabeth in a grave she dug near her rural Jefferson City neighborhood. Search crews spent two days combing the area in search of Elizabeth before Bustamante led them to the child's grave.

It's unclear exactly why prosecutors decided to drop the first-degree murder charges against Bustamante, though this summer the state was dealt a blow when a judge ruled that it could not use some testimony she made to police during trial because it was obtained through "deceptive tactics."

Bustamante reportedly practiced an "emo" lifestyle that focused on the occult. Following her arrest, photos (like the one above) and videos of the troubled Bustamante went viral online.

I feel so sorry for Elizabeth family. May god watch over them. As for the murderer may you rot in hell. I maybe a bitch but to take a life to know what it would feel like is something that Karla holmolka and Paul Bernardo said. There is no coming back after committing murder. Face the facts you dissapointed your family and your free will. May you rot in peace.

@Steph_of_beauty there is never a reason to kill somebody I also sympathize but how can you feel sorry for a killer. She killed a young kid there is never a reason to kill anybody

This chick should serve life in jail and get beaten up for the resst of her life. she gets to walk free in a few years while a little innocent girl lost her life because this emo bitch wanted to feel how it felt to kill someone.so why not make her life a living HELL.

It's funny how all you retards commenting on this subject want to see a young girl rot in prison. No one bothers to listen to Bustamante's feelings. Everyone just wants to hear their own self talk garbage while sounding politically correct.Remember Columbine? no one wanted to listen to the two boys and look what happened.

@13377731 When I was fifteen years old I had been through a lot more than Alyssa. I wanted to literally kill the man who put me and my mother through hell. But I never did. Why? Because even though he deserves to be punish, killing someone never solves anything. NO ONE has the right to kill, not unless it is literally self defense. While she might feel regret, while she may have did it for a completely different reason than she stated, fact is fact, and she killed an innocent child.

Like someone else said, she knew what she was doing, this was a personal crime. Then she tried to bury the body. For those of you who keep saying she is a child. What idiots, you must have never had to be a child or raise one, because at 15 or 33 you know right from wrong. Taking another life is wrong, and eye for an eye. That 9 year old had no choices, and if it were any of your children that was the one who got stabbed and murdered you would be yelling out for her death in exchange. I have two young boys if any one hurt either of them they wouldn't have to worry about the death penlty, they would have to worry about me.....

So, she has a chance of getting out and doing this to another child because she's "better" now? I was reading something from her attourney that sad that she was going through a rough patch "at that time..." How is KILLING excused with going through a rough patch?! She was fifteen and clearly f*cked in the head!

You people are stupid as hell, she was a child herself when she committed the crime. No, that doesn't excuse what she did, but it also means it's unlikely she'd have done it as an adult. Teenagers have poor impulse control, especially those with emotional disorders. She can be rehabilitated and I hope everything turns out for the best for her.

@Don't Bother Replying. I don't agree I am a 13 year old and I know killing is bad she should have known better because she is a teen not a kid.

She took the life of a child, therefore she should have to give up her own life, in prison. With the wonderful people she admires.

It's going to cost the state of Missouri a LOT of money to deal with her, regardless of how long she is in prison.  Because of how young she is, combined with what she did, plus the all the press coverage of her case, she's going to have to be in protective custody for quite a while.  I don't see her getting out of prison alive--either she'll commit suicide or the other inmates will get to her.

She should be let go into full time house arrest and shown a more productive and loving way to live .. She has a beautiful mind and expresses it in a way that adult peers have let her do .!! A Child!! Remember This!! It's not too late to change her way of thinking !! .. This world of law makes me sick the way they treat people like this and just lock em up and shit!! Any one who belittles her or condemns her with their mind should be Shot !! So there was a murder victim and that is very sad but Elizabeth where ever she is now would not wish harm and a life of mental pain and stress upon Alyssa !!

People seem to have a hard time believing that females can be psychopaths. It goes against our perceptions of women as being kind, caring, and nurturing. Well, most women are kind, caring, and nurturing, to varying degrees. Except the ones that are psychopaths.

Though psychopathy in women is less common than in men, it's not dramatically less common, and female psychopaths are no less insidious than male psychopaths.

Of course I am merely speculating that Alyssa is a clinical psychopath based on the little evidence we've been given. She may be psychotic or something, but that seems much, much less likely.

This also has nothing to do with satanic rituals, the emo subculture, or shitty screamo music. There have always been young psychopathic killers, from Mary Bell a half century ago, to Jesse Pomeroy over a century-and-a-half-ago, and on and on as far back as there have been humans.

I'm not one for the death penalty. Think about it; sitting the rest of your life in prison is hell itself. Keep her in a padded room because seeing that she has had a past suicide attempt, it is obvious that eventually she will kill herself. So, to make it even worse, keep her from even attempting suicide. There's the other torture. She is obviously not right in the head and this is coming from someone who has bi-polar. :P

This case should be thoroughly investigated despite the plea deal. For Elizabeth and Alyssa, it is very important to try to understand exactly what happened. There is far too much uncivil condemnation towards Alyssa. She was very young when this crime allegedly took place. "Kill the child" as a response to a child killing a child is hypocrisy. Until we can understand why something like this takes place, we will have no way to prevent it in the future. Consider her environment, anti-depressants at a very young age, and other factors.

Hey Chad Garrison, do you even know what "emo" is? It's short for EMOTIONAL. Emos don't kill people. They mostly just cry and write poetry about how they wish they were dead. Don't lump her into a category like that as if they're all bad kids. This girl is clearly a textbook psychopath. THAT is what you should focus on. Horrible journalism at work here. I'm surprised you have a job.

Statistically she'll serve about 27 years, which still makes her relatively young when she is released. Given the nature and brutality of the crime, I think life without parole would be a more fitting punishment. I'm not convinced this woman could ever be successfully reintegrated into society.

princess1977

I agree with you Kurt...I know people who have met this girl, because they work or have worked where she is or has been held,  and she to this day has yet to show any bit of remorse for her crime. She acts as tho being in jail/prison is like being away at summer camp! It is ridiculous and I believe that the death penalty is too easy, life in prison with no possibility of parole is what she deserves, she doesn't deserve to walk free in this world every again!

Swoonychic

She wasn't a woman, she was a child. 15 years old is not an adult. She wasn't even old enough to drive. Its not an excuse, but it is a mitigating factor. The law doesn't recognize a 15 year old as being cognitive enough to sign a cell phone contract, but yet somehow cognitive enough to be sentenced to prison for the rest of their lives? The girl needs help. There IS a chance she can become a productive member of society. Look at Mary Bell, Robert Thompson, and Jon Venables. All three were child murderers, served their times, and live their lives in obscurity as productive members of society. She did an awful, horrible thing and will live with that for the rest of her life. Does letting her rot in prison make her act any less horrendous?

Andrea
Andrea

As much as I agree with your assessment of children being up for life imprisonment charges, I really wouldn't use Jon Venables as a good example of a child murderer grown up to a productive member of society.  He has been charged with distributing child pornography and has been sent back to prison.  Do a little homework on them before you actually put their names on a list such as this.

Chris
Chris

You act like everyone commit a murder when they're in a child.  Don't give me that shit about how she was a child when she murdered in cold blood; it's an insult to every child who knows it's wrong to commit murder.  As I said above, if you want to give her chance, let her move in with you when she gets out of prison.

Bruce Edmund Carroll

i think she can be successfully reintegrated into society with a lifetime of counseling, and support from the community, and good choices. she made the first step in potentally being released into society by taking responsibility for her actions by pleading guilty. the next step is self rehabitilation behind bars IE getting her GED, pursuing a degree behind bars, serving time behind bars, going to therapy, maintain good behavior, stay out of the hole. hold a job behind bars, and taking the time to pray and do some community service from behind bars, and learn to control her anger and temper.

Skyler Is Bossy
Skyler Is Bossy

She took "responsiblility" by pleading guilty because that's what her attourney told her the courts wanted to hear. That's how these kinds of things work... not trying to be rude.

Just try to imagine the last thoughts of Elizabeth and what went through her mind as she was being strangled.  What did Elizabeth's eyes look like as she was being stabbed? Did she feel much when her throat was cut?  Did she feel her lifeblood escaping her body and settling in the dirt?  All alone, wind blowing, leaves rustling and nobody to save her.  Did Alyssa smile when the deed was done?  Think about this comment when you look at your own family members, maybe you won't have such and notion that this murdering woman should have ANY sort of future other watching the needle plunge into her arm.

Jellylee20202
Jellylee20202

1.  She didn't take any responsibility for her evil deed.  She plead guilty to avoid spending the rest of her life in prison without the chance of getting out.2.  She didn't kill out of anger and temper, it was cold blooded calculated murder.

If you want her living in your neighborhood or better yet even babysit your children then maybe you should lend her your guest room when she's out.  I certain won't want her anywhere near my family.

Prominent Prozac
Prominent Prozac

That sounds all chipper and good..in La-la-land. Unfortunately that's not really the reality of the situation. First off, reduction of the sentence is most likely what has her pleading guilty, as before she previously held onto pleading NOT guilty for quite a time. Regardless of the obvious guilt. Being so young and doing something so large tells you something not good about her. To strangle someone and stab them is the most cold, personal kill, at 15 I could barely stand to see an animal mistreated without wanting to throw up, let alone strangle, stab and bury a 9 year old. The digging of the holes shows the planning, the time she had to second guess and get herself help, but did not.

However, I sense your heart is in a great place, and you are just simply unwilling to accept some people should be put away and forgotten. I see that you are holding a very beautiful baby in that photo, in light of your proposal, I have one of my own. Go find someone convicted of such a crime, or perhaps Alyssa herself if she gets out on time, and offer them a job, with a child you love. You're quite sure right? I'm willing to take that risk of ever seeing her in public again if you are willing to walk the walk.

everyone remember she was a teenager at the time of the crime. if she was an adult, I would have not been willing to give her a chance at being a part of society. I believe that life without chance of parole for teenagers is a cruel and unusal punishment. remember that teenager's brains are not yet matured which is why teenagers tend to  make reckless decisions without taking the time to stop and think. whereas adults brains have matured for their age. Trust me. I was a teenager all wild and crazy. Yes,I did get inschool suspension, but never went to jail because of a school program where they only reserve jail as a last resort if suspensions and IBM (Indvidual behavior modification) did not work. an Ibm is a 24 hours of inschool and inhouse suspension if you're a dorm student or 2 days of inschool suspension where you lose all priviledges like going to class, eating in the cafe taking a field trip, attend events on school grounds. things like that. after 24 hours you have to tell your peers what you did wrong to earn IBM then your peers vote on wiether to let you back in the community or continue ibm for 4 more hours. I know that almost no one hear of a IBM, but its similar to inschool suspension and inhouse suspension. trust me, I was in a program for students with behavior problems. this program kept me out of the streets and gave me the chance to develop life skills to be independent. If she had this type of school programming, its likely she would have had resources to help her control this type of curiousity. had she been idenified earlier in her childhood.

Do you not know what a psychopath is? There is no rehabilitation for a psychopath. They're BORN that way. All attempts at rehabilitating murderous psychopaths have failed, and in some instances, caused their rates of re-offense to skyrocket. This girl will do it again. Because, you see, that's another thing about psychopaths. No matter how many times they kill, they can't quite remember that feeling unless they kill again...and again and again and again. People without psychopathy tend not to kill "just to see what it feels like." Lock her up and throw away the key!

Prominent Prozac

A beat down I can abide by, she certainly never seemed to get enough, but killing her?Nah, she wouldn't be worth it. None of us should have to give up our lives for a little shit like that..Now if the goverment wants to put her down like a sick dog and no one has to be punished for that to happen, I'm okay with it.

As for the bleeding hearts, the funny thing about them is they're all "worried"..but I greatly doubt any of them would want her with them, for the obvious reasons. All talk, no action. Simply they don't really have the guts to say it how it is. She should be put down or rotting in a cell.

Steve

the truth is that even if she ever gets out of jail alive or without being a cellblock ho-whether that is 10 years or at some time down the road, she will NEVER integrate back into society-because people will be waiting for her release. People worried about someone killing/hurting this little murderer are misguided. She belongs in a hole herself.

Prominent Prozac
Prominent Prozac

If you want to take it like that, you can I suppose.

I would take it more as I would not be one to allow a child killer to be around me. I, myself prefer them in cells or on death row. That's a more acceptable place for murderers.

(Ahhh, if you're referring to my "put them out of their misery", I directed that at death row.)

Prominent Prozac

You love that kid don't you?You seem to be holding it lovingly enough, you wouldn't want to see any bad come upon that innocent little kid would you?.

Considering she'd have free pick of any child of her choice on the streets, merely by walking by or any other innocent, who's to say this was a one time incident?..There were two holes remember that.

There would be no way to properly split her up from people she may harm..Oh wait, there is. Put her out of her misery, or keep her locked up.

I would think it's in the best interest of herself as well, considering there are many people on the outside as well that do not take well to child killers. I know this because I am one of them.

"I'm not convinced this woman could ever be successfully reintegrated into society"I don't believe she should be given the chance to integrate. What is the point? She confessed that she wanted to know what it feels like to take someone's life. Who knows what else she would be inclined to "want to know?" Rape? Blowing up a school? People like her have some mental/psychological safeguards miss-wired or missing in their brains. We should just keep them locked up.
