Missouri Trapper Nets Mountain Lion; Animal Released Into Wild

Thought: University of Missouri should really change its mascot from the tigers to the mountain lions.

In the past 14 months there have been 17 confirmed sightings of the big cats in Missouri, with this week's run-in with a mountain lion the most convincing confirmation yet.

It happened Wednesday when a trapper in southeastern Missouri went to check on a cage he left in the Mark Twain National Forest about 130 miles south of St. Louis. Wayne Henson usually finds bobcats, raccoons and coyotes in his trap. In place of those animals this week was a 122 pound cougar.

Kudos to Henson for not killing the federally protected animal (like other yahoos have done). Henson called the Missouri Department of Conservation, which sedated the animal and released it back into the wild.

The cats can only be killed if posing an immediate threat to livestock or people, and conservation officials say there was no reason to believe the animal was a risk to either. They believe the animal, a two-year-old male, roamed into Missouri from western states.

Amazing, we have someone from hillbilly-land that somehow had the restraint to come across one of these animals and NOT blow it away. Due to the fact that virtually every other story concerning a mountain lion in Missurah involves it being indiscriminately shot by some sister buggering moonshine swilling country fuck it seems the rule of thumb in the sticks concerning mountain lions is to madly shoot a high powered rifle at it and ask questions later. "Look out Ned! It's coming right fer us!!"

This might be of interest to readers, but trapping is legal in Missouri on limited basis!  It has a lot to do with the trapper's reasoning for not killing the cougar.  He likely passed on killing the cat (still kudos...) not for altruistic reasons, but had he killed it without cause, he would've lost his trapping permit.

My sister is doing well, works downtown making a good wage. She had the good fortune not to have been raised by coon hunting, roadkill eating, toothless, mullet wearing, stinky trash from the sticks.
