• When I got married almost 40 years ago,  my in-laws had a beautiful home in Spanish Lake that was the sum of their dreams.  They were peparing to retire to a rural area and wanted us to buy their house.  One of the luckiest things that ever happened to me was that I wasn't able to afford it.  The white couple that bought it eventually sold it for next to nothing.  The last time we drove by it there were signs on the door,  probably condemned.  The street was teeming with unsupervised,  out of control young blacks. This is not a racist statement,  it is a fact.  At the time there were two apartment complexes close by,  Countryside  and Spanish Pond.  The Sierra Vista was build shortly thereafter.  I don't know what their names are today,  Rat's Nest will do and when I see news interviews of the crime victims, mostly black now,  even they are trying to figure out a way to escape a completely ruined landscape - given to all of us by agencies such as HUD.

• i moved to spanish lake 3 years ago and my home value is up 35%. i have a kick ass 3 bed 1.5 bath 50's ranch on a half acre at the end of a dead end road. don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out.

• I've spent many a day in Spanish Lake and Bellfontaine Neighbors, and like so many  suburbs to the north, they have suffered greatly.  I lived in Webster Groves during the '60s and '70s, and also worked in Sunset Hills for a decade up until 2002, so I'm very familiar with the suburban areas of St. Louis County.  Spanish Lake and Bellfontaine were both very well maintained and safe with low crime rates for quite a while after I had moved away from Webster in the latter half of the '70s. My father remained there, so it was painful to see the urban decay overtake those once lovely suburban cities over the years.  Seems it all happened so quickly.     My comment was simply directed to the self anointed "morality police" and their remarks which I considered insulting to those who had commented previously.  I decided to move on to other forums to read and comment freely without the drama. I have friends in all areas of the St. Louis suburbs, and I know what some of those areas once were and what they are now.  It is a very stark contrast.  I no longer live in the area, so I cannot comment further regarding semantics or political issues.  

• The towns of Black Jack and Spainish Lake started to self destruct . Business is what created the white flight. More and more blacks were moving into a depressed township. St Louis County cut back on services while the tax base rose. The time to leave was at hand: even the neighbor , Bellfontaine was showing there own depression. Good times, great friends, was and always will bent 20 plus years in Spainish Lake

• I raised my family there in Spainish Lake and enjoyed my time there . You must remember that the seventies created newer homes in the area. All due to the investments of a few builders. The old S L now was growing with young families to create growth in the old and new business in the area. When the apartments grew in number with low to no income, those same businesses closed and moved to other areas to make the mighty dollar. When the big retailers like Sears; Famous Barr and Stiix Bear and fuller pulled out of Jamestown Mall

• Libs like to point out offenses made against jews, homosexuals, blacks and others but never make it a point to spout off about all the damage those aforementioned groups do. • Amen, Alex Carlson!  I'm shocked at what the RFT allows in the comments section.  Even the P-D, and KMOV, the comments sections of which are full of scary bigots, monitor the comments section, or at the very least remove the worst comments for being off-topic/hateful, etc..  (Which most all of the comments above Alex Carlson's are.  What on earth does any of that have to do with this blog post?) Like you, I'm also embarrassed for our city when I see these comment sections.  What on earth will anyone think reading them?  Is this the image the RFT wants St. Louis to project?  Do you really want to let 11 racist trolls use your site as a mouthpiece for their neo Nazi (yes, I went there) crap?

Every article I read that's not about entertainment/culture winds up with antisemitic, racist, homophobic, bigoted vitriol in the comments, and it makes your publication and our city look terrible. Pull the irrelevant, ignorant comments when they're posted, and eventually the hatemongers will find some other place to spew. In the mean time, they're stifling meaningful discussion that could be taking place. If I walked into a room and one loudmouth bigot (or a group of loudmouth bigots, in many cases here) were having this same conversation, I'd turn around and walk out for fear of winding up in a fistfight. • We moved to Spanish Lake 5 years ago, found a beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood. Since we moved here, all the people who had lived in this neighborhood for 50 years, has moved out. Our property value has fallen drastically and our property taxes have gone up 3 times. We will also be giving up our home and moving out of Missouri completely this spring, we no longer want to live in a state that is curupt and tax hungery, The people of this state need to take back what is theirs and stop letting the few RICH control your lives.

I'm glad he brought that in to the discussion because it's hight time that the area confronts our local band of jewish gangsters and deals with them with the sort of harshness that's long overdue.

• Section 8 housing has been an unmitigated disaster.  Whatever economic benefits it was supposed to have it has destroyed through the economic damage it has done to neighborhoods across the country and the crime and disruption it brings with it.  Rather than spread section 8 housing equally the program should be done away with altogether and replaced with programs that target specific demographics like the elderly or veterans instead of lumping everyone within an income bracket into one category.  It’s not fair to communities, the sick, elderly, or veterans to have to be categorized with the criminal, the lazy, the insane, and those abusing entitlements in general.   It is unfortunate that there are disadvantaged demographics in this country that make better neighbors than others but that is the truth.  Criminals belong in jail, the lazy belong on the street, and the insane belong in institutions, not in federally subsidized housing.
