Dannie Willaims To Fight Hank Lundy on March 30
|Dannie Williams, here with his WBC Continental Americas lightweight title, hopes to add another mid-level belt to his resume on March 30.|
While the fight was not finalized until this week, it's been generating a decent amount of anticipatory hype the past couple of months thanks to a stream of trash talk between the fighters' respective camps. In December, for instance, Lundy's trainer Jimmy Burchfield told Boxing Scene, "Right now Hank is the most targeted fighter in the lightweight division. He's the fighter television networks want. There are several options for a title defense, and you're at the bottom of the totem pole."
Apparently he's not at the bottom of the totem pole.
The fight, which will take place at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, offers Williams the chance to cement his status as a serious contender in the lightweight division. Lundy, who knocked out David Diaz in his last fight, will be his best opponent since he suffered the only loss of his career, to Eloy Perez in 2009. In his nine fights since, he has built up his record against opponents with a combined 126-85-16 record, knocking out seven of them.
Williams v. Lundy is the kind of match-up that can springboard the winner onto the fast track for a world title shot.
