The mother of the baby that was left under a pine tree in an Ellisville yard yesterday has been found. The unidentified 19-year old West County woman had checked herself into a hospital for treatment at 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Hospital staff contacted police, who questioned her there at the hospital. She cooperated with their investigation, and now detectives will present the case to prosecutors for charges.

Interestingly, if the woman did not want the baby, she could have given it to any number of people and not faced charges. Missouri's Safe Place for Newborns law allows a parent to leave a child younger than one with any on-duty personnel at a fire department, law enforcement agency or hospital -- like the very one she checked herself into later that same day.
