Online Petition Aims to Stop Senseless Killing of Missouri's Mountain Lions

Stop SB738
Last week we told you about state Sen. Bill Stouffer's desire to eradicate mountain lions from Missouri with his bill that would allow the animals to be shot without reason.

On Thursday Stouffer's bill moved one step closer to becoming law when it was read for a second time and referred to committee. But not so fast...

This week Craig Lanham, a St. Louis area police officer and volunteer conservationist, fired back launching an online petition that he hopes will derail Stouffer's legislation from ever becoming law.

"The Senate bill reeks of those unfortunate days when people shot bisons from train windows for amusement," says Lanham, who became an advocate for the Missouri's small population of mountain lions after raccoon hunters in Ray County (Stouffer's district) shot a treed cougar last year and were not prosecuted.

In 2006 the Missouri Conservation Commission responded to reports about the growing number of cougar sightings in the state by codifying that the cats could be shot if they are attacking livestock or property or are threatening human safety. Stouffer's bill would remove those two key restrictions, allowing the carte blanche killing of the state-protected animals.

"The truth is they don't belong here," stated Stouffer this month when presenting his bill.

But the bigger truth, notes Lanham, is that the cougar was native to Missouri from time immemorial until the last known animal was shot in the Bootheel in 1927. The Missouri Department of Conservation believes the 28 confirmed sightings of mountain lions since 1994 have all been male cats that wandered in from other states. Moreover, there's no record of a cougar attacking livestock or a human dating back to settlement days.

Lanham, who has worked in the past in conjunction with the California-based Mountain Lion Foundation, says he hopes his petition will catch the eye of Stouffer's fellow legislators and the governor and encourage them to dismiss the bill.

"They need to know that the world is watching."

You can sign the petition here.

MDC wants mountain lions back in MO, they will only accept incredibly rigid evidence of sightings, they pass most sightings off as mistaken identification (bobcats etc), to say they don't attack livestock is nothing but politics. If Craig Lanham wants mountain lions in MO he should turn them loose in his neighborhood and we will see how it goes.

The same people that load up and kill mountain lions are the same tards that the government has brainwashed that Muslims are the enemy and jews are the "good guys".

They'd just leave. Young lions, especially males disperse over great distances. The ones sighted in MO just pass through. Pirates apparently have very little knowledge of mountain lion natural history. Remember the one that passed through Chesterfield last year? Did it go on a bloodthirsty kitty rampage? Did it kill children and cattle? Nope. Maybe some bunnies died, maybe a sick deer or two. No one would have even known he was around had it not been for some guy's game cam. They don't want to mess with humans. Most predators don't.

To Craig, if you're reading this, keep fighting the good fight, buddy!!! You're awesome and I will see you sometime soon!

What does this article have to do with religion? Sen. Bill Stouffer should drop the mountain lions from his bill and call for open season on race-baiting, anti-Semitic commenters like you.

No but there's a lot of porch monkeys in St. Louis.

Yes, bobcats are actually abundant in the Ozarks and fairly common in the rest of the state.  You don't see them often because they are mainly nocturnal.  Primary prey is rabbits, squirrels and birds, though a large bobcat might occasionally take a fawn.  They have made a big comeback from the 1950s, when they were rare in the Ozark and non-existent everywhere else in the state..  Black bears are making a comeback too.  It's the result of 77 years of improved game management and reforestation.

If Stouffer succeeds with this legislation, then we turn the clock back to 1935.  That's when the Conservation Department was established to get fish & wildlife management out of the hands of the legislature. That's when game and forests starting being managed with scientific principles instead of legislative fiat. If he can legislate killing mountain lions for any reason, why not any other species in the state?  Whey not bobcats?  Why not bears?  Why have any limits on deer, after all they are a traffic hazard if they cross a highway.  Slippery slope.

What are jews - a race or a religion?

Let's ask the last census Hmmmmm..... no check box for jewish? Oh but they claim a minority status for themselves on government contracts? but I thought the government doesn't give religious preference? Oh silly me, only if you're a jew and control the media, the courts, education.....

It's gotta be Frank Welker (aka The Couch Potato) under several screen names putting up the anti-Semetic comments.  It's been an epidemic for a long time now and it's getting both boring and infuriating.  Why he and his followers are taking over the comments section makes no sense to me.
