MO Senator Kevin Engler to State Butterfly: Get the Hell Out

Categories: Politics
A gulf fritillary butterfly.
Senator Kevin Engler (R-Farmington) has had it up to here with Missouri designating everything in sight as the "Official Missouri Whatever." It was the latest such proposal to anoint an official state butterfly -- the Fritillary butterfly, as if you didn't know -- that drove Engler over the edge.

Denouncing the increasing proliferation of such motions as "stupid," Engler is particularly bothered that:
"We're having a difficult time getting things done as it is, and to continually subject this body to the ridicule that all we do is the 'official Missouri and things' is dumb."
Is Engler correct?

I'm already on record as hating the idea of making jumping jacks Missouri's official exercise because jumping jacks are dumb, and it's even dumber to spend the time doing so just to honor the memory of a Missourian who's been dead since 1948.

Besides, we already have a state grass (big bluestem), a state instrument (the fiddle) and two different state water creatures for some reason: The state fish is the channel catfish, and the state aquatic creature is the paddlefish. Since they both have "fish" in the name, I'm gonna assume our legislature was trying to impress a pretty marine biologist when they doubled-down on state fishes in 1997.

We've made it 189 years without having an official state butterfly -- I think we can go another 189 years without one before it really starts to cramp our style.

I think they're good ideas... Gets kids involved, learning.  Besides, it gives the lazy, cranky set another thing to go off the tracks about. Lighten up people :0)

Most of the "Missouri State Whatever's" are from schools trying to get children interested and involved in politics. I know the State Fossil got me interested when I was a child.

Another RFT attempt to vilify those nasty peopl with R's next to there name.Who cares if this guy doesnt want to go throw the rigamaroll to designate a state butterfly. Stick to drink specials and copypasta from the VV home office.

No harm, no foul.  I remember the paddlefish designation was a project by school children interested in nature and state government.  Nobody was hurt in passing that bill.

You can say that again Paul!  As a Missouri Common Mestra butterfly I'm livid that my home state would play favorites among the numerous indigenous butterflies that call Missouri home.  I'm far more common (it's my name duh!) than the Fritillary, who between you and me, is a little bit "gay" if you know what I mean.  Screw you Missouri Legislature!  Either the Common Mestra gets official status too or we're all leaving!
