UPDATED: Sneak Peek at Mizzou's New Football Helmet?

Categories: Mizzou
Updated with information from the person who designed the helmet and a possible clue that the new Mizzou hard hat will look "shockingly similar" to the image below.

Yesterday, University of Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel confided to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the team's new uniform -- to debut April 14 -- will not feature the "M" that's emblazoned the helmet for decades.

Pinkel would not reveal what the new helmet might look like, but today the following image slipped out via Facebook and other social media.

Is it the new look of the Tigers? Hard to say at this point. The university has yet to make an official announcement, but it has said that its collaboration with Nike would create a new outfit that's a stark departure from the current uniform. The team wants a new look as it enters the SEC this fall.

Update: So, it turns out that the helmet above was designed by Aaron Lademann, a graphic artist who grew up in Columbia and is a "life-long Mizzou fan." Lademann tells Daily RFT today that he designed the helmet (and several others viewable on his website) in mid-December and posted them on a Mizzou message board.

"I did it just for fun," says Lademann. "There was a lot of speculation as to what the helmet would look like. So I spent a few hours coming up with what I thought could be a realistic design."

The images then migrated onto social media. But here's what's really interesting:

After his initial helmet design (Version 1, pictured to the right) was posted online, Lademann says he got a call from Don Barnes, the equipment manager for the University of Missouri football team who Lademann knew from the mid-2000s when he worked for a sign company that contracted with the school.

Barnes asked Lademann if the giant tiger logo he designed could work as a decal, or whether it would have to be painted onto the helmet. Lademann says he has since heard from several people with access to the new uniform that the helmet Mizzou has chosen looks "shockingly similar" to Lademann's Version 2 helmet (the one featured at the top of this story).

"I've also heard that they have three or four helmet designs that they'll wear with different uniforms, so who knows?" says Lademann. "But if they did go with my design, I'd like to be able to state that on my website. I don't want any payment. Just to be able to say that I influenced the helmet design would be cool enough."

Ohhhh......... now I see!  I thought it was palm fronds, and couldn't figure what that had to do with Missouri.  It's a kind of expressionist view of a tiger, sort of.

Missouri HAD a tradition, but allowed Nike to murder it. The SEC is tradition. LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, UGA, don't sell their tradition. Why did Mizzou? Very sad.

the first picture I like, aside from the fact the logo is only on one side. you're not the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it on both sides. the second image looks hideous. I agree that Mizzou should change from the block M, just too vague. I think their oval logo with the Tiger head on a black helmet would have looked good. the thing about the SEC is none of them have really outlandish looking helmets. Alabama has the numbers, Tennessee the orange T, Florida has the cursive gators, etc.

Wouldnt hurt to have something on the right side, aside from the dull gray! Maybe mizzou spelled out or non-average tiger stripes! Aside from that, great design! Does look tough 'n great time to start fresh going into the SEC!!:)

The SEC is a lousy fit for Mizzou; and now it just keeps getting worse....

I do not not like this at all.  Why is Missouri obligated to change their uniform?  Is A&M going to change theirs? They're not a better program.  Didn't we kick their butts the last time we played?  How about Nebraska since they moved?  I guess they are content to lose all their in-state recruits who are now supposedly going to flock to Missouri since they will have a helmet that would "appeal to more 18 year olds".  I can't wait to see Pinkel's list of top recruits that chose Missouri because of the new helmet.

What is it with Nike and gray? So many of their "new age" uniforms in football and basketball feature dull, dull gray. It's like gray is their favorite color, they felt so symbolic yesterday if they met Picasso they would find a grat guitar and play.

Personally, I like the helmet, but I am not from Missouri. Looks imposing and tough. The Bungles helmets are also one of my favorites and I think it is the most original helmet design in the NFL.

I am from SEC country and although I think the geography is off, I think Mizzou will be a good fit there and can compete. Missouri could probably walk in and challenge Kentucky for basketball in the conference, and your football team isn't bad. Nice thing about Missouri, it is a large state with only one major football school.

What is the difference there? I can not figure it out.

Why do these appear to have a maple leaf on them?

Awesome! And I fully expect recruits will absolutely love it! (Just for the record, I'm 66 and still rockin'.)

It's hideous.  The tiger is WAY too big and a logo only on one side of the helmet is simply idiotic. I guess they think cameras will only show them from the left side so viewers can recognize the tiger logo.

Maverick, great points about the rest of that design.

Identity?  With 3-4 helmet/uniform designs, there is no identity.  Maryland has awful combination schemes & identifying them while channel surfing games or in highlights is nearly impossible without a "Maryland" graphic on the screen.  Boise St, Arizona St, & Oregon aren't much different.  They sold away their identity.

sooooo sick! we need to stand out more on the national stage, and revolutionary design paired with moving to a new conference will help to do that.

The big "M" is too much like Michigan. I like it. A new design for a new conference.

I don't think it's ugly. The design is wild. The giant tiger epitomizes the identity of the team.

That #1 example has multiple problems.  From a distance it will look like the letter "Z".  You cannot make out either the "Eye of the Tiger" or its mouth, thereby rendering it useless as an intimidation factor.  And, it's too large.  Other than that it might work, but as shown it needs work if that photo is even close to the final design they will announce later at the Black & Gold game.

If they dont keep the block M, they need to go "Cincinnati Bengals" style and have a black helmet w/ gold stripes!!!

That's why it's "V1", and there are now V2 and even V3 on that guy's portfolio site...  It is my understanding that the V1 design was never meant to be publicized. It was shared privately on a members-only message board, and then was put on Twitter without permission.

In my opinion Bengals helmet design is 2nd ugliest in football, right after the Jets.  They've had that design since 1968 and were the laughing stock of football when it first appeared.  Their players were ashamed to wear it.  Would prefer to see a caricatured Tiger somewhat in the style of the Broncos new design.  The examples we see here are too large and the #1 option, upon first glance, looks like a "Z" without any resemblance to a Tiger.  My Chiefs could stand an upgrade as well since they have had the Arrowhead since they came here from Dallas in 1963 and changed from Texans to Chiefs.
