He may be Albert Pujols's good friend and hitting disciple, but it appears that he won't follow Pujols's lead when it comes to delaying contract negotiations.

The Cardinals will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. (CST) this afternoon from thier Spring Training complex in Jupiter, Fla., to announce a contract extension for catcher Yadier Molina, according to the team website. According to news reports, the All-Star backstop has accepted a five-year contract worth $75 million.

Last year, the 29-year-old led the team in batting with a .305 average. He added fourteen home runs and 65 RBIs -- and twelve additional ribbies during the World Series. This year, the final of this current contract, he will make $7 million.

Analysts say the deal is a smart one for the Cards.

The loss of Pujols to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim left Molina frustrated, with fans worried he might be next out the door. But the Golden Glove catcher made several statements suggesting that business is business and his emotions wouldn't play into a new deal.

KDSK this morning quoted him as saying: "I will say this: I like the town, I like the city, but at the same time I have to think about my family. Like they would about their team. Like I said, this is business. If I get good money, I'll take it. If I don't, I'll go away."
