"Preferred" proposal for "the lid" across I-70
The Missouri Department of Transportation is holding an "open-house style" public meeting today, from 3 to 5 pm at City Hall. The topic: How should we reconnect downtown with our river and national monument when I-70 slices right between them?

MoDOT is going to "discuss several proposed alternatives" for the "Park Over the Highway" part of the project -- known to some as "the lid" over I-70. Engineers will be on hand to discuss the impact of each course of action -- including the course of action that "the department believes is the preferred alternative." (See renderings.)

Yet critics have been grumbling for a while that the public has been woefully un-consulted on this project, known as City+Arch+River 2015.

Those critics include Alex Ihnen, chair of CitytoRiver, which favors a more radical transformation (including getting rid the elevated lanes of I-70).

Ihnen wrote yesterday on his blog, NextSTL.com:
While it's a positive step that for the first time in more than three years, the public will have the opportunity to view and discuss alternatives to the currently proposed lid, giving eight days notice for a public meeting to be held on a Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. displays a lack of priority given to the public part of a "public meeting". The meeting is labeled an "open-house style" event and it's difficult to see it as anything other than an FYI regarding whatever final design has been selected.

Having attended similar 'public' meetings going back to the 1990s, trust me-the people weigh-in on nothing. This is a cliche that prints good and sounds good but is not applicable. All this is so 'pinned down' from the top, these are complete wastes of time. And the media 'sucks' it up.

Any idea if 'the lid' can be built without any major closures to I-70?  If not, I'm picturing a huge cluster-f*ck.

Oh
Oh

A legitimate question, assuming they actually choose a design and start construction before the new Mississippi River Bridge opens in 2015.
