Brian Lamont Cannon Jr, 20, has been charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and burglary for his purported role in the shooting of Florissant Patrolman Mike Vernon on Monday.

Officer Vernon responded to a reported burglary in the 1800 block of Banstead Drive in Florissant, and was actively searching for suspects behind a nearby shopping center. Cannon allegedly popped up from inside a trash bin and fired at Vernon, hitting him in the chest and spine.

The seriously injured Vernon was still able to describe his assailant to his fellow officers, and a police canine unit found Cannon hiding in the backyard of a home not far from the scene of the shooting. Cannon is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Vernon, an Army veteran who survived two tours in Iraq only to be shot in America on Memorial Day, is currently in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.
