In Defense of KSDK's Julie Tristan and Her David Freese Interview

Freese! You're on cringe cam.
So, this summer Six Flags is operating its "Mr. Freeze" roller coaster in reverse. To generate publicity for the ride, the theme park invited media out last week to give it a spin. To make the junket seem less self-serving, Six Flags also invited some kids from Big Brothers, Big Sisters to try out the roller coaster.

If all that doesn't sound "newsworthy" on its own, Six Flags took the extra step of getting Cardinals' World Series MVP David Freese to come out and ride the roller coaster as well. Because wouldn't it be fun to have Mr. Freese ride Mr. Freeze? Backwards?!

And that's how Julie Tristan of KSDK's "Show Me St. Louis" ended up interviewing fawning over David Freese. If you haven't heard about it yet, Tristan's segment went viral over the weekend, earning her scores of hate from the media over the way she jokingly hit on the Cardinals' heartthrob throughout her three-minute piece.

"The most uncomfortably awkward fluff piece ever," wrote Deadspin.

Larry Brown Sports opined: "A word of advice for Tristan after that pathetic display: Express your crushes on your personal time, not when you're supposed to be a professional on camera. That was disgusting."

"Tristan whiffed big time on this one," wrote Yahoo! Sports, adding that the KSDK reporter "added a lot of fuel to the damaging stereotype of a female journalist who's only on the job to meet good-looking men."

But here's the deal for all those "real" journalists out there who are outraged -- OUTRAGED -- by Tristan's shtick.

Tristan works for Show Me St. Louis! Show Me fucking St. Louis. This isn't a news show. It's a midday puff program for bored housewives, most all of whom probably agree with Tristan that Freese is dreamy and could care less about baseball or Six Flag's roller coaster ride. (And, yes, some men watch Show Me St. Louis, too. They think Freese is even hotter than Tristan does.)

So, please. Stop all the self-righteous moralizing on the ethics of journalism. There was absolutely nothing newsworthy about Ms. Tristan's assignment to cover Six Flag's new ride -- even if it involved a baseball star and some disenfranchised kids. So she handled it with a bit of humor, something you could use more of.

Oh, and those who say they feel sorry for David Freese -- that he deserves better. Does he really seem that put out in the following clip?
