Ten Days of 100+ Degrees Kills 12 in St. Louis Region -- So Far

Our long hot spell claimed seven more lives, according to the latest figures from the St. Louis Health Department. That brings our total up to twelve for the summer of 2012. Just as in the earlier cases, almost every person in the latest batch of victims were older citizens, and they either had no working air conditioner or refused to use it. The one exception was 8-year-old Altamesa Dobson, who was born with the medical condition CMV, according to KSDK.

The other six victims are:

Linda Allen, 62, of the 4500 block of Pennsylvannia Avenue.
Jeanette M. Basch, 76, of the 4400 Wabash Avenue.
Marvin C. Flanigan, 72, of the 3100 block of Nebraska Avenue.
Hedwig I. Hanus, 84, of the 3800 block of Marine Avenue.
Henry Lee Lomax, 72, of the 4300 block of Evans Avenue.
Jeanne M. Marshall, 75, of the 3300 block of Arlington Avenue.

Mayor Slay issued a statement reminding everyone to remain conscious of the extreme heat, because it might be cooler now but the summer ain't over yet. "We are just entering what is typically the hottest part of the summer. We must remain vigilant, take proper precautions and look out for each other."

That's good advice year round, actually.
