Maplewood Mayor Fears LGBT-Rights Bill Will Let Dress-Wearing Perverts Raid Pool Showers

Will Maplewood allow this to happen?
As things stand, the City of Maplewood cannot deny somebody a job, or housing, on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex or disability. Duh.

Tuesday night, the City Council took another step toward adding "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to that list of reasons for which it can't discriminate. This ain't remarkable; if the bill finally passes after its third reading on Sept. 25, it will render Maplewood the seventh municipality in St. Louis County to add such protections, according to PROMO (a state-wide LGBT advocacy group).

What caught our eye, however, was the nature of Mayor James White's opposition to the bill.  He apparently fears that the bill will offer legal cover for an all-too-common scourge on society: The convicted male sex offender who decides to dress like a woman and gallivant through the women's shower room at the public swimming pool, ogling all the naked ladies.

We weren't able to attend the meeting when Mayor White made these statements, but Doug Miner of Patch.com was there. He filed this report yesterday:
White paraphrased what the ordinance could do, per a legal opinion from the city attorney.

"Under this ordinance you can have a male by birth, he could be a convicted sexual pervert, he could, under this ordinance as written, go into the women's bath area at the pool and simply by saying, 'I feel like I'm a woman today...'

If anyone tried to move this individual out of the women's bathroom, out of the shower stall, as he goes by opening all the curtains, saying he was looking for something open. If one of our residents...push this person out of this...bathroom, under this ordinance they could be convicted of a hate crime," White said.
We at Daily RFT recognize that sometimes, a well-intentioned ordinance can be so broad that it has unintended -- and very bad -- consequences. We don't know if that's true in this case, because we're not attorneys.

So we called Mayor White to hear his thoughts and to ask him for a copy of this legal opinion from his city attorney. His e-mailed response:

There have been well know surgically transitioned people (in the news) since the 1950s.

So, how many sex offenders in drag have been pulled out of women's showers, or bathrooms or anything else?  How about a very small number like 0; a nice round number!

I've been post-op for 20 years and living as a woman for longer.  I've never seen a man of any type invading a ladies room.  And, Yes, I waited until after my surgery to enter a ladies pool shower room.  Like everything else, there were no problems.

As "Goldshow" says, if a man, a criminal, a sex offender or martian decides to enter a ladies room (of any kind) he probably will be able to, whatever laws say.

honestly i believe that people read into this to much ..... i'm a trans-girl and as it has been said before it's a bathroom even if you dont allow us to use the women's restroom we're still going to do it and besides whats the difference of a transgender in a womens bathroom and a lesibian .... there is just as much of a threat there as a trans women and no one even cares about that ... all your doing really is trying to force us into a potentilly dangerous situation.... and someones bound to turn a death or two on the people who are pushing against this fact .... stop fighting it doesn't do any good

I am a transgender female, I am so fed up with this bathroom nonsense.

First off, IDIOTIC MORONS, Please do explain how criminals follow laws.

If someone really wants to hurt someone, no idiotic stupid law is going to stop them from doing so. Are legislators, police and religious people DEAF, DUMB AND STUPID?

I have yet to see a criminal obey a law.

By promoting discrimination, the only ones you are hurting is the transgender community that is simply trying to use the bathroom.

KNOCK IT OFF with this b.s. argument of a sex pervert using the bathroom. NEWSFLASH FOR IDIOTS, transgender people are not sexual deviants.

and to the legislators, police, and religious morons out there, if you try and prevent me from using the woman's bathroom, I guarantee you that it will be your LAST mistake.

The bathroom photo used for this article is totally unrepresentative of what one might expect as one might walk into a restroom. Trans women use the restroom of their identity (the women's) and of course there are no urinals in such restrooms, As it is, the restrooms have stalls for each commode and have locking doors and trans women as any women, use the commode in those walled stalls. A trans woman using a restroom, would be no different than using the bathroom in one's home.

It is unfortunate that the RFT chose to use such a contrived photo. The St Louis Community and all communities would be better served if the RFT took it upon themselves to seek cultural compentency education and awareness, of the Trans (Transgender) Community.

This "bathroom argument" is the same old thing that was propagated by Phyllis Schlafly that kept the ERA from passing.  It cruelly suggests that LGBT people are perverts and that sort of thinking is exactly why every community needs a nondiscrimination ordinance.

I had to read the headline twice in order to make sense of it.

I've never understood the separate restrooms. You go in, and do your business, and leave. Not a place to hang out, and definitely not a place to worry about sexuality. But as the recent news has shown, some laws will lead to unintended consequences. The Gay Marriage laws were recently questioned why they should not be expanded to threesomes and brother-sister.
