McCaskill Hammers Akin With Ads Featuring Rape Survivors

"Tell me your worst story ever, and let me make political hay out of it."
Senator Claire McCaskill's campaign today launched three television spots aimed at drawing attention to Republican candidate Todd Akin's extreme pro-life views and his "legitimate rape" comment from earlier this year.

The commercials all feature sexual-assault survivors, including one woman who says she's a Republican who chose not to take emergency contraception at the hospital. "Because of my personal beliefs, I declined," she says. "Here's what else I believe: No woman should be denied that choice."

Below are all three spots. Take a look, then tell us: Will these ads sway voters?

Ms McCaskill belittles women with this attempt to mis-characterize her opponent. Mr. Akin opposes rape, make no doubt of that. While McCaskill will find excuses in the rapists upbringing or mental health, Akin will seek to keep rapists from ever harming another woman. One can oppose abortion and still oppose rape. To claim otherwise is a lie.McCaskill has a woeful record to run on, so she clings to the idea people will vote against her opponent. She wants you to ignore how she voted to give her husband millions in taxpayers' dollars. Millions. She is the worst sort for office.

Even if you cannot vote for Akin, cast your vote for another candidate - Green Party, Libertarian, whomever, even write in a name. But do not send McCaskill back to get richer.

Good, I'm glad she is all ears. At least someone cares about rape victims.

I love how things like this are only offensive if they doesn't fit with your political position.

Quotes might have helped clarify the intended sarcasm of the title.

OMG this woman will stoop to any low to get a vote. I am in no way voting for Todd Akin but I'll be damned if I will vote for her EVER

Agreed, Otis. Better would have been to ask: "Got a legitimate 'legitimate rape' story you want to share? Claire is all ears."

RFT - Given your usual sarcastic story intros, which I generally love, I kind of wondered if that was the case. Having said that, though, I didn't pick up on much sarcasm in the article. I get that she's exploiting victims, and I agree most readers would be savvy enough to pick up on that much...but the story seemed like pretty straight-ahead factual reporting. Just my two cents. I think rape's a sensitive enough issue that making any kind of joke about it at all is treading in dangerous waters.

What Doug said. Perhaps click on the link before rushing to judgement, folks.

It was said sarcastically making fun of how she's exploiting victims.

Seriously RFT...I love you guys, but "good rape story"? Maybe you were pushing the envelope on purpose, but I'm kinda thinkin' those three words should never go together. It's kinda along the lines of "legitimate rape". Don't stoop.

That was a fucked up way to say it. Good thing no one reads RFT anymore.

Get off it. Focus on actual policy, please.
