Jefferson County Man Gets Shot in Chest While Playacting The Movie Savages
|This is an Oliver Stone film. Don't re-enact it.|
Trouble often begins that way.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the three friends converged Monday evening at the victim's house at 400 block of Thoreau Trail in Murphy. They drank and started watching the Oliver Stone film, Savages.
Which by some accounts is not a great flick; as The New York Observer's Rex Reed wrote of the characters played by Salma Hayek, Taylor Kitsch and Benicio del Toro, "These are neither good people nor interesting savages, and they're not worth caring about. Neither is the movie."
But we digress.
Just before midnight , according to the sheriff's report, the victim and a 27-year-old male buddy started talking about the best way to disarm somebody holding a gun, "based on a scene from the movie."
Sounds like they used a prop, too: A 9mm handgun. Because during their play-acting, one went off. A bullet struck the victim in the chest. The deputies responded at 11:59 pm and the victim was airlifted to a hospital.
The 27-year-old buddy -- suspected of unlawful use of a weapon -- was suspected of unlawful use of a weapon and taken into custody. Latest media report is that the deputies presented their case to prosecutors, who will decide what to do next.
