Bridgeton Landfill: Really Awful Smell Not A Health Hazard, But Still Stinky, Officials Say

The studies are the result of an order issued by the Department of Natural Resources to Republic Services regarding the collection of air quality data at the landfill. The company, the order states, is required to pay for the costs associated with data collection -- and to not interfere. That full order is on view below.

Here's the full statement from Republic Services, which now appears to have a website dedicated to this landfill:

Republic has not yet seen the air quality report from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, but understands that the results showed that the odors at Bridgeton Sanitary Landfill pose no health threat to area residents. We are pleased that the testing could provide such assurance to our neighbors. We will continue to work with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to ensure that testing and monitoring are continued as needed.

We recognize that while the air quality remains safe, the odor is unpleasant and we remain fully committed to our efforts to improve our landfill and bring the odors under control.

Why does it smell? Foul odors are made from invisible gases that have vaporized from the source such as smoking, cat urine, cooking. These vaporized odors float through the air attaching to the suspended cation particles which act like a sponge absorbing and carrying the odors and toxins through the air we breathe. Air-ReNu a paint additive, turns any wall, surface, into a permanent air, purification system no electricity or filters required, a one time permanent solution.

any foreign bacteria ingested into your lungs is bad for you maybe you should consult a doctor and ask his opinion...Or officials should camp there for awhile or are they busy spending their payoffs

I work in this area. Some nights are stinky, yes. But occasionally the smell is so overpowering that it literally makes me gag. I leave work, jump in my car, and I can't wait to get out of the area.

Driving up 270 at St. Charles Rock Road over the weekend - the smell was horrific. I had to close my vents in the car.
