Video: Republican Rep. Eric Burlison Literally Opens Fire On Missouri Gun Control Bill

The gun control debate in Missouri has gotten really heated. Like, violent.

In response to Democratic Representative Rory Ellinger's recently introduced assault weapon ban bill, Representative Eric Burlison, a Republican, published a video on YouTube yesterday with the title "2nd Amendment puts holes in HB 545." Burlison goes around interviewing regular folks about why they think Ellinger's bill is so darn crazy.

But then the video takes a surprise turn: "It's a great bill," says one dude, with a rifle in hand. Really?

"It's great target practice."

Yikes.

Here's the video, posted yesterday.

As you can see for yourself, the video takes a dark turn, when a shooter points his rifle at a physical copy of House Bill 545 and proceeds to fire five loud shots into the piece of paper.

And Burlison then examines the printout -- punctured with bullet holes -- noting that yes, in fact, it does make good target practice.

That's one way to express opposition.

The bill has sparked a lot of debate in the last few days since its introduction. As written, the Assault Weapons and Large Capacity Magazines measure prohibits any person, corporation or other entity in Missouri from manufacturing, importing, possessing, purchasing, selling or transferring any assault weapon or large capacity magazine, as defined in the measure.

Any violation would be considered a class C felony. One of the most controversial components of the bill is the specification that any person who was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine prior to enactment would have 90 days to remove the weapon from the state or surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

The bill outlines which guns fall under the "assault weapon" category, including semi-automatic pistols or rifles that have the capacity to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition.

The pro-gun representatives in Missouri are, very unsurprisingly, very unpleased.

Just ask Burlison and the law-abiding gun owners he interviewed.

Here's the bill.

"the video takes a dark turn" - huh? Humorous. Funny. Mocking. Ridiculing. Dark? Really? Shooting holes in a senseless bill is sport. Dark would have been shoot at images of the sponsor and co-sponsors. Dark is not shooting holes literally or figuratively through the idiotic ideas presented in the bill.

The gun control nuts will never understand that their definition of an assault rifle is a rifle they are afraid of. Nothing more than that. The gun shop owner showed two rifles - both exactly the same trigger, chamber, and barrel. The only different is cosmetic.

Limited magazines sounds reasonable until you learn it takes someone a half second to swap magazines. Limiting magazines is a feel good, but do nothing idea. Besides, I can turn a conventional ten clip into a fifty clip with normal tools found in most garages. Once again you enhance the criminals and disarm the law-abiding people.

Pro gun control is anti-trust in your fellow law abiding citizen. Anti gun control is believing there are people out there wishing to do harm to others.

Moss do you know if he has a FFL class 3 holder? Might not be illegal. Do your research before you speak.

"Flash suppressors and barrel shrouds were seen as 'military' features, and were on the list of Federally defined features that could cause a rifle to be defined as illegal, if manufactured after the effective date of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that went into effect in 1994 in the United States. This ban expired in 2004, though some states still have similar bans." if you don't trust Wikipedia I don't blame you and I can find the exact text for your obviously too anal and technically wrong ass!

technically all "silencers' are flash suppressors ::claps at your failure::

This bill is offensive and unconstitutional. Requiring law abiding citizens to turn in legally owned firearms sounds a lot like a police state. Scary stuff that elected leaders are trying to move our society in that direction.

I don't care what type of paper he shoots--wasting time doing it as a publicity stunt doesn't get anyone anywhere. What am I paying him for again?

Offensive? Give me a break. The bill is offensive. What Burlison did is simply a publicity stunt.

We respect the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms they said.  We're not going to take your guns away they said....

THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE VERY CLEAR, many 2a supporters and pro-gun people have been derided and made out to be paranoid across this nation and on the dailyRFT for suggesting that gun confiscation is a primary goal of the anti-gun movement.  THIS LEGISLATION IS EXACTLY THAT.  IT PROPOSES CONFISCATION AND DISPOSSESSION  AND MAKES POSSESSION OF MANY TYPES OF FIREARMS AND ATTENDANT FEATURES FELONIES.  IT TURNS LAW ABIDING CITIZENS LIKE MYSELF WHO ARE THREAT TO NO ONE FELONS.  This is not paranoia, this is real.  Legislation like this in Missouri, Colorado, New York, California, Maryland, Viriginia, and being proposed nationally is precisely the motivator behind why gun owners are up in arms and have every right to be.  This legislation is unconsitutional, unreasonable, illogical and just plain wrong.

Now before people jump down my throat I certainly understand target practice but this video seems to say to me "a gun is my toy" btw nice illegal silencer

yes, this seems like responsible gun ownership! Perhaps we have overlooked paramilitary weapons as surplus paper shredders. Maybe we can use them as can openners and most importantly to turn off Fox News broadcasts.

Whether you legally own the gun or not, isn't discharging it the way he did illegal?

If you're gonna waste legislative time with a publicity stunt like this hopeless bill, can't complain when the other side makes a publicity stunt out of opposing it.

@Brad Fitzgerald , the gun control nuts are showing their hands with bills like this. The moderates in the debate will see the police state the gun control nuts want, but don't want to tell you.

As for just having police armed. Look to recent events in California with the police hunting down their own.

@Angela Poeling , you only pay him for the time the legislature in is session. Otherwise, he has his own income sources.

@Marc Seleman , he discharged a weapon at a shooting range, and you think that is illegal? WTF? Learn something about the subject before trying to regulate it. Your fear is not a reason to restrict my rights. One great liberal once said, "The only thing we have to fear is Fear itself." I'd add ignorance to his list.
