Maria Chappelle-Nadal Says Gun Control Critics "Don't Care About Black Lives Being Taken"

The gun debates in Missouri reached explosive levels this week with the introduction of a GOP bill that would make it illegal to even propose gun control measures and a bizarre stunt in which a Republican rep literally opened fire on a piece of legislation he doesn't like.

Meanwhile, Democratic State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, isn't getting anywhere with her gun safety bill -- and says she is fed up with rural lawmakers that don't know anything about the urban violence she is trying to curb.

"I got a lot of haters out here and that's fine," she tells Daily RFT. "But what I say to them is that they don't care about black lives being taken. They don't understand or care to understand the cultural differences that we have here."

But, she says, she has a plan to make them care.

As we first reported when she introduced the measure in January, Chappelle-Nadal's Senate Bill 124 would require parents to notify schools if they own firearms and also report if their children have illegal guns. If parents don't report it, it could lead to a misdemeanor charge -- or a felony, if the gun is used to cause injury or death.

As soon as it was introduced, the proposal was slammed by Republicans as a violation of the Second Amendment that punishes law-abiding gun owners.

Chappelle-Nadal, who represents University City, tells Daily RFT over coffee in the Loop, that her bill is stuck in committee because of Republican opposition.

"The gun nuts in the legislature are so adamantly opposed to understanding our cultural issues in the inner city that they're unwilling to listen to my standpoint," she says.

In response, and as a way to pressure the GOP opposition to give her proposal a chance, she says she is going to filibuster as much as she can with their pro-gun bills she opposes.

"My recourse is filibuster -- and this is one issue where I'm willing to fall on the sword," she says. "If they don't want to know about my community that I represent, then they're gonna hear a long list of why I think my standpoint is very important."

In response to her critics, she also notes, "My legislation doesn't try and take away anyone's gun."

What is most frustrating to her, she says, is how ignorant other lawmakers are about the violence plaguing her district.

"It's about people who live in high-poverty areas," she says, adding, "It's not about parental involvement. It's about parental accountability."

There are students in her region that face such great hardships, "The only way they feel like they belong is by joining a gang," she says.

And she's seen gang violence firsthand.

And notice she doesn't say "I have a lot of people opposing my stance on this issue" - she says "I got a lot of haters out here".

She doesn't get the point, and she does not deserve to be a public servant if she sees anyone that opposes her views as "haters".

A lot of people with haters like to say "If you have haters, you're doing something right", but to that I say if you have haters, you might just be an asshole.

Senator Chappelle-Nadal is wrong, inter city crimes or/and killing caused by criminal with gun. We need law abide citizens with gun to take their city back...

You can find laws to punish criminal behavior, and leave law abiding people alone. It is not that a gang member owns a gun that is troubling. That he is willing to use it is troubling. Pointing a gun at an innocent person is assault. Have them arrested. Do not wait until the gun is fired. Use the existing laws, and yes, it will mean many more people going to crowded jails and prisons. So what? that is where they belong. No picnic. No socializing. Hard time. Free cell space by removing non-violent criminals to receive large fines and house arrest. Full sentences, too. Repeat offenders will start losing much property until their home is only a cot.

I don't understand why you can't just hop in a big rig, or bulldozer, and drive off without some sort of proof you can operate it (CDL), yet you can go into a gun store or show, and buy anything they have without proof you can operate it. Second, gun offenses should be settled in a dedicated "gun court." There should be no bail for ANY gun offense, to include flourishing a weapon. We are too lenient the way courts handle gun and domestic violence offenses. Some of the things that happen "on the block" would end up being capital crimes in the military. We need to get trigger pullers off the street more than the triggers themselves.

when you're afraid of being called "uncle tom" for pointing out the REAL issue...just blame white people.

Senator Nadal is why NRA and those of who support the NRA can not give an inch. Deal with Mental Health, poverty and crime if you truly want to curb violence!

The gun issue is a very difficult issue to solve. How do we keep guns out of the hands of bad people without restricting the rights of good people? And how do we make sure those good people's guns don't end up in the hands of bad people (see: Adam Lanza)? It seems that universal background checks, as well as strict licensing, registration, and storage requirements would be the best option, but it appears to me that many gun rights advocates are opposed to these types of measures. Any other suggestions?

Michael, I was referring ghetto, single mothers also known as hood rats who have kids from multiple partners. The type you saw on the news who were fighting at the public aid office in East St. Louis. A typical, single mother regardless of class does care. I was referring to the bad ones. As far as statistics, turn on the five o'clock news and watch the crimes being committed by minorities who were raised by hood rats.

Most the people committing crimes with guns don't have legal guns anyhow....so exactly how does more laws for them to ignore work?

Michael Schmidt

Scottie "single mothers don't care about lives being taken." Do you have any evidence to back this up? Because all the single mothers I know love their children very much and prefer that they don't kill people. Adam, saying that more guns decreases gun violence is the same thing as saying more cars decreases traffic. Again, do you have evidence to back up your claims?

Gun control aimed at the 1% of illegal sales specifically sold to inner city criminals could be fixed but the NRA and it's lobbyists have made it impossible. Obviously if you don't care about stopping the illegal sales that are designed for one purpose only, it does seem like you consider the people targeted by them- disposable.

No I don't agree, why does everything have to have a color?

On the converse, increased availability of guns in the hands of citizens would save lives in those areas, which, given those demographics would actually save 'black lives'. Such a buffoon.

I personally believe more safeguards, stricter background checks and harsher penalties for gun crimes (and crimes committed with a gun to which you are registered) should be considered, but what Senator Chappelle-Nadal says here is detrimental to any momentum behind these things happening. Quite unfortunate.

She should be addressing that ghetto, single mothers don't care about lives being taken. Before going to the gun control critics, she should be addressing the issues within the black community and then go straight for the critics.

THIS IS NOT A RACIAL ISSUE...THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE...IF GANGS WANT TO KILL EACH OTHER OFF THEY WILL FIND A WAY...CHILDREN ARE BEING KILLED IN THE CROSSFIRE...SOMETIMES WHILE IN THEIR HOMES... GET GUNS OFF THE STREET...

How ignorant of her; has she seen Chicago? Gun control endangers lives - just look at the Progressive enclaves that enact some of the most stringent policies.

This woman is insane, and by playing the race card by saying those against her "don't care about black lives being taken" shows she has no real comprehension of the problem.

Maria, you couldn't be more wrong.  Gun owners like myself are concerned about crime and violence in our inner cities.  Where we differ with you is your and anti-gun pols' insistence that the evolution and origin of these problems is the guns available on the street.  Instead of insinuating rural Missourians (read "white" people...see what she did there) don't care about your community, perhaps you should be asking yourself why young black men care so little for their community and other young black men.  Or why parents in your rep district KNOW their kids are involved in crime, drugs and death and do nothing.  Or why there exists a pervasive sub-culture of violence and degradation within the african-american community nationwide and why black leadership like yourself continue to to BE SILENT AND UNCRITICAL IN THE EXTREME OF THE BAHAVIOR WITHIN THEIR DEMOGRAPHIC.  Guns are not the problem in inner-city neighborhoods Maria, the culture is.  But changing the culture is too tough isn't it?  Too hard.  To much time and so little political reward at the end of the day.  It's easier to go for the low-hanging fruit...gun control, handouts, jobs and racism to explain why young blacks are killing each nationwide at epidemic levels.

Go ahead and pass legislation Maria.  You won't see violence in your district reduced one bit.  Keep passing the buck.
