Michael Bryant, 17, Faces Murder Charges After His Burglary Accomplice Is Shot And Killed

Michael Bryant, 17
Michael Bryant, 17, and Demetrius Murphy, 15, allegedly tried to break into a St. Louis home near Gravois Park in the middle of the night last week. As we reported, the burglary did not go as planned.

Murphy ended up dead -- and now Bryant is facing murder charges.

Police recently announced that the Circuit Attorney's Office has issued warrants for attempted burglary against Bryant -- and second-degree murder.

Why the latter charge?

Missouri law says that this teenager can be charged for felony murder since Murphy died during the burglary, in which he was an accomplice.

That means that in addition to penalties for attempted burglary, Bryant will likely face sentencing tied to second-degree murder allegations.

There's not much information out there about Bryant -- other than that he is 17 years old, is from the 3500 block of Miami Street and was allegedly trying to break into a Louisiana Avenue home at about 1:30 a.m. Friday morning when a 33-year-old resident of the house noticed the disturbance.

Police say that man came out with a gun -- but Murphy didn't back off and instead approached him.

The unnamed man fired shots at Murphy and killed him; in Missouri, people who come against intruders in their home on their property are legally allowed to use this kind of deadly force.

Bryant was not harmed.

Here's the short notification from SLMPD about Bryant's charges, followed by the original incident report.

The Circuit Attorney's Office has issued warrants for Murder 2nd and Attempted Burglary 1st against 17-year old Michael Bryant of the 3500 block of Miami in connection to this morning's incident on the 3700 block of Tennessee.

It's disgusting how many here are happy about the shooting death of a 15 year old. At the very least I'd expect a human being to express sadness about the combination of events and poor choices that led to this death. You don't have to approve of the alleged crime in order to recognize a tragic waste of a life and empathize with the family.

Thanks for bringing that forward Donna, people are too ignorant to research things for themselves

yes you are. you wouldn't think it too insane if someone was in your backyard trying to unlawfully gain access to your house.

As tragic as his death was, Demetrius Murphy was working his way up the ladder of crime when he was shot dead last week. At age 13, he was arrested for being the prime suspect in a Knockout Game where he allegedly severely injured a man walking down Gand Ave for no reaseon or cause. - Mayor Slay to the rescue. He was referred to as The Knockout King. The charges had to be dropped after a young girl who witnessed the crime refused to testify out of fear. Now, two year slater he was involved in a burglarly that went horribly bad. Had he succeeded he would have kept committing more crimes and most likely with guns. While it is tragic a 15 yr. old was killed, perhaps his death will inspire some of his gangsta brothers to change their ways before they meet the same fate. But don't hold your breath!

Omg, Bill, this was also the kid, who at the age of 13, beat up that guy in south city in that "knock out game". He wasn't Forced to do anything!

The question really is, was he Forced to commit the robbery by the 17 yr old or was he there by his own accord?

How long before this news article accumulates all of same comments from south-city white people cheering about a dead kid that every other news article has gotten?

Not a lot of news here that wasn't covered days ago. I notice that we still don't have any mention of any weapons carried by either of the alleged burglars; I also notice that we're still missing any explanation of why the police believe that they can charge the surviving kid as an adult (or why the newspapers are identifying him) despite the fact that he's still a juvenile.

We're just taking the white guy's word for everything, here. And, I know, the white guy might be telling the truth. But neither the police, nor any reporters in this town, are doubting him, despite the fact that the one thing that we know for a fact is that the dead person is an unarmed 15 year old kid.

It's hard to feel sad about these deaths when they number literally in the thousands, tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands.  Poor choice after poor choice...bad decision after bad decision...made over and over again in spite of overwhelming suggestion and understanding of how bad and how poor they are.  Tragic wastes of a lives that when added up create a grim statistic that is almost mind-numbing in its stupidity...that many people could be that stupid and willfully malicious to the fellow human beings.  But they are.  And they do.  And they don't stop.  Not because we don't want them to but because they won't.  Murphy and Bryant knew it was wrong.  So do the countless thousands like them.  I think to myself what would have happened had the homeowner not been armed?  What if he hadn't shot Murphy and Bryant didn't take off running?  Would you say the same thing about the homeowner killed, his girlfriend or partner raped, or children subjected to unspeakable horror?  Tragic?  Empathize with their family?  No.  Of course not.  Murphy and Bryant made themselves and their families made them.  I have no empathy because that would require me to place them on the same level as their victims.  They are not equal.  Unequal not by fate, unequal by choice.

For starters whether or not they had weapons is irrelevant, they were committing a felony on private property and the law (MO castle doctrine...thank goodness) makes it quite clear the homeowner was within his rights to kill him.  Second Bryant can and should be charged as an adult for the murder of Murphy because Murphy would still be alive if he and Bryant had decided not to burglarize a home.  That decision, not the homeowner's decision to shoot, killed Murphy.  Are you suggesting that because of their ages Murphy and Bryant didn't realize what they were doing was seriously wrong and potentially fatal?  Of course they did.  Murphy paid with his life and Bryant will pay with significant jail time.  That's not cheering, that's justice.
