Byron Williams, a 23-year-old Missouri father, made a lot of mistakes during a Sunday early morning car chase -- and based on the absurd details of the official report, it seems miraculous that he and his two-year-old son are both still alive.

Allegedly under the influence of drugs, Williams was driving down Highway 71 at 4:30 a.m. at more than 100 miles per hour -- which, you know, caught the eye of patrol officers, who attempted to stop his Dodge Stratus. But he exited the highway, sped down an access road, ran a red light -- and briefly escaped police, officials say.

An officer then found the vehicle rolling on an access road -- with no one inside except a two-year-old boy, not in a car seat.

Where was Williams? Off getting hypothermia in a creek, police say.

This crime story in Grandview, Missouri was strange enough to catch our attention here in St. Louis.

A news release from the Grandview Police Department, on full view below, says it all with its title, "Father abandons unrestrained 2 year old son in a moving car after driving over 100 mph."

Yikes.

The vehicle was rolling driver-less on an access road when it stopped on its own -- after hitting a guard rail. The two-year-old in the car, later identified as Williams' son, was in the car and has since been placed in the custody of the Division of Family Services.

Williams, after allegedly abandoning his son in the moving vehicle, was located nearby in a "creek hiding in waist deep water."

He was taken to the hospital since he was found to be suffering from hypothermia. Police say he appeared to be under the influence of drugs, but don't have any further specifics.

He was charged with driving while under the influence and also faces other traffic charges relating to the high-speed chase exceeding 100 mph. Police say he has bonded out of jail on those Grandview city charges.

The Grandview Police Department is continuing its investigation of possible state court child endangerment charges.

Here's the police report on the incident.
