On February 12, 1963, construction began on the Gateway Arch, launching the two-and-a-half year, $13 million build-out of the tallest national monument in the country. In honor of the anniversary this week, we've assembled historic photos below.

Courtesy of the Missouri History Museum and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, here are some shots of the monument's creation half a century ago -- brought to you as officials today are making plans for the site's redevelopment.

I remember each piece going in place. It was always in the news. Later, a girl I had a grade school crush on's father was the "transportation director". When someone got to the top but was too scared to come back down via the capsule cars, he would have to walk them down the stairs to the base.

no mention as to what the plan is for the rusty interior base that was designed not to rust or be maintained, but did due to oversight of its self atmospheric enuresis...

I would suggest that no one would dare suggest, and certainly not build, such a project today. The foresight and courage of the planners and builders is a monument in itself.
