A 53-year-old woman was asleep in her bedroom on Tuesday morning when, police say, her door alarm went off.

She woke up and heard voices of men inside her home.

When she exited her bedroom on the fourth floor, she saw three men in hoodies walking up the stairs toward her.

That's when she allegedly fired a bullet in their direction.

The single shot from the unnamed victim, an Asian woman who lives on the 2200 block of Miami Street in south St. Louis, was apparently enough to scare away the men, police say.

They then reportedly fled out a side door.

No injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.

The home invasion happened at around 10 a.m. in the morning.

The suspects are all black men -- one believed to be age 20-25 and the other two 30-35 years old.

The incident comes less than a week after a 15-year-old was shot and killed allegedly trying to burglarize a home near Gravois Park. His suspected accomplice in the break-in, a 17-year-old Michael Bryant, is now facing second-degree murder charges.

In Missouri, people are allowed to use deadly force against intruders.

How many of you Missourans are secretly hoping for someone to attempt to break into your house so you can shoot them down in cold blood? Even better, leave one alive and he'll be charged with the murder, not you! Am I right 12judges?

Greg Smith, I'd like to see this chart. I can't speak to the gun laws of individual countries worldwide, but the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime puts the US murder rate at 4.8, making it about #103 out of 203 countries.

People who are in favor of gun restriction shouldn't be afraid of stories like this, because nobody (except maybe Nathan up there) is trying to keep 53 year old law abiding ladies from owning guns. Many of us would like to make sure that the knuckleheads that broke into her house don't bring their own gun next time, though.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." Wayne LaPierre, NRA's executive vice president Unfortunately, the "bad guys" are the ones that made this statement valid. I wish people would chill out on the "good guys" trying to find a way to protect us. Sometimes it's not the ideal way because the ideal way isn't physically possible. (Do YOU think all the bad guys are just going to turn over all their guns? Doubtfully.) Double unfortunately, this is the way our society has developed.

I am a fervent gun supporter, but even I was amazed at the world map showing gun laws, worldwide, and the corresponding murder rate, also worldwide. America has by far the most open gun laws, but worldwide, the lowest rate of murder. Even including Chicago

maybe she should have tried hugging them into submission instead. Or throwing rainbows at them

"Fuck guns" you say? Opinions are like assholes, and when you're standing in front of a victimizer with your thumb up your opinion I'll have a viable means to protect myself or you, a total stranger with their thumb up their opinion.... Good day.

Guns should be dispensed from vending machines at gas stations. Obviously, since this one person fended off intruders with a gun. That makes it all awesome! Guns are SUPER! Nevermind the lax gun laws that make it easy for anyone to get one. Also, disregard our accepting culture of gun lust. Guns are obviously sexy and worthy of praise. The 2nd Amendment says so.

They are reporting a story, and you all are falling prey to a heated debate about guns. Sigh. Or, maybe that was their intent and the editorial comment was implied. Whaddo I know? Good Friday, everyone.

With new gun control, that is how it will be most of the time. Law abiding citizens will be able to defend their families while criminals will have to run for their life! YAY!

For anyone who thinks the staff at RFT is making an editorial comment about guns, read this. (Just as this small town paper in MS was making no editorial comment about gay marriage.): Cegielski continued: We were well aware that the majority of people in Jones County are not in favor of gay marriage. However, any decent newspaper with a backbone can not base decisions on whether to cover a story based on whether the story will make people angry. The job of a community newspaper is not pretending something didn't take place or ignoring it because it will upset people. No, our job is to inform readers what is going on in our town and let them make their own judgments. That is exactly what we did with the wedding story. Our reporter heard about the wedding, attended it, interviewed some of the participants and wrote a news story. If there had been protestors at the wedding, we would have covered that the exact same way … but there weren't any. We never said it was a good thing or a bad thing, we simply did our job by telling people what took place. I took the bulk of the irate phone calls from people who called the paper to complain. Most of the complaints seem to revolve around the headline, "Historic Wedding," and the fact that we chose to put the story on the front page. My answer to the "Historic Wedding" headline is pretty simple. You don't have like something for it to be historic. The holocaust, bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Black Sox scandal are all historic. I'm in no way comparing the downtown wedding of two females to any of those events (even though some of you made it quite clear that you think gay marriage is much worse). [...] We have stories about child molesters, murders and all kinds of vicious, barbaric acts of evil committed by heinous criminals on our front page and yet we never receive a call from anyone saying 'I don't need my children reading this.' Never. Ever. However, a story about two women exchanging marriage vows and we get swamped with people worried about their children. I had at least 20 or so readers express to me they think gay marriage is "an abomination against God." We never said it wasn't. We never said it was. "We were simply reporting to the best of our ability," Cegielski wrote. "However, I can't help but be saddened by the hate-filled viciousness of many of the comments directed toward our staff … No one here deserves to be berated or yelled at simply because we were doing our job." http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/gay-marriage-mississippi-newspaper-owner-140311568.html

New gun control laws will only take guns out of the hands of people who follow the laws, not the criminals. I applaud the homeowner for protecting herself!

...and all the gun nuts cheer. Guns for everyone. A gun in every hand! Hooplah! Hooplah! Fuck guns. And thanks for glorifying them at a time when gun laws need serious reconsideration, RFT.

The anti-gun lobby hates stories like this. Imagine my surprise to read it in the RFT.

Free people have the right to arm themselves to defend their life, liberty, and property. Those that try to deny us of life, liberty, and property should be denied all three.

The sheeple in Illinois take note. Missouri acknowledges this right; whereas, in Illinois your right to even own the defensive firearm is being questioned. Discharging it? Watch out!

Perhaps the thugs will start learning some homes have people ready and willing to use a gun to defend themselves. The thugs will never know which door leads to lead poisoning.

Impossible!  A GUN actually kept a non-police officer or military serviceperson SAFE!?!  And a 53 year old woman no less!  Surely this must be some kind of fluke in reporting or partisan news-making at its finest.  Everyone knows guns don't keep people safe and only offer the ILLUSION of safety right?  //SARCASM OFF

Maybe she should have used harsh language, a call box, a rape whistle or even better....A GUN FREE ZONE SIGN to keep these guys away.  According to some of recent anti-gun commentors, all of these would have been much safer and much more effective at getting 3, potentially armed, over 20 years old male criminals to run out of her home.  What's really great about this story is that there were 3 of them.  Sometimes it's not 3...it's 4 or 5 or 6 of them...sometimes more.  But according to Joe Biden, who needs a high-powered modern sporting rifle like an AR15 to defend themselves?  "JUST BUY A DOUBLE-BARRELED SHOTGUN" because after all you're not going to be going up against an armed mob right?

Anti-gun people are pathetic.  According to them, the collective illusion of safety and their ability to think happy happy thoughts forever are more important than this woman's right to defend herself with a firearm of her choosing.

How immature...how childish.  You're a talking stereotype of yourself and your desire to paint all gun owners and self-defense advocates with the same broad demonizing brush.  Myself like most gun owners and self-defense advocates are hoping for NO SUCH THING.  More often than not self-defense situations involving guns are resolved without injury or loss of life precisely BECAUSE a gun was there.  I have used a gun to protect myself and my property on 2 seperate occassions (once in Benton Park and again in the Southwest Gardens neighborhood) without having to fire a shot, hurt or kill anybody.  Grow up.
